Paula T. Hammond made history in January 2026 when she became the first woman to serve as Dean of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's School of Engineering, marking a major milestone for one of the world's leading engineering institutions.

Raised in Detroit by a biochemist father and a mother who founded a nursing school, Hammond developed an early interest in science and education. She earned her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from MIT, a master's degree from Georgia Tech, and a PhD in polymer science and technology from MIT.

Throughout her career, Hammond became a respected scientist and engineering leader, known for her research in materials science, nanotechnology, and biomedical applications. Her contributions helped advance innovative approaches to drug delivery and medical treatments.

Her appointment represents an important moment for women in engineering, a field where women have historically been underrepresented in senior leadership positions.

From a young science enthusiast in Detroit to leading MIT's engineering school, Hammond's journey reflects decades of academic achievement, scientific innovation, and leadership. Her historic appointment is inspiring future generations of women and young scientists to pursue careers in STEM.
