NC native palm.Three gallon. The original tree shown in the photos was grown from seed and grew up in place in zone 8 NC with a fat trunk. Temperature low of zero with almost a week below freezing with many single digit lows that week.

We love coming to work in the mornings on sunny days with blue sky and white clouds to see views like this in the parking lot. Two grown from seed Sabal palmettos. A blooming Little Gem Magnolia and a large clump of Sabal minor palms.

We really appreciate people who love palms when they come to visit. We give them a tour of our palms that are the parents of the ones they purchase so they may see what they are going to look like when mature. We grew the parent palms from seed as in the case of this 30 year old Sabal minor ‘Craven County Giant’. All of the palms we grow and sell are grown from old, time tested specimens growing here at our place in Craven County, NC. So blessed to be able to have lived long enough to see this slow growing Sabal minor at maturity.

We have been going through our growing areas to find the best looking and the largest of the many species we grow to offer at the nursery and on eBay. Today Missy found a group of several hundred one-gallon Sabal minor (Dwarf palmetto of the McCurtain County, OK ecotype. We have had these growing in the ground at our place for about 20 years and found them to be almost what you might call a semi dwarf compared the much taller, faster growing Craven County NC minors. That is a good thing where you would want a smaller minor, as in our case, planted in front of azaleas as in the photo. All of our palms are grown from seed from mature specimens growing at our home in Craven County, NC. that have survived some very cold winters. These palms are the survivors of the 2018 freeze and those are the palms we harvest our seed from. Available here on ebay ebay.com/usr/goat66

This is what it is all about!!!
So many people from all over the country, who are unable to come in person have asked us many times to do mail order for our NC native palms so we started doing it a few weeks ago by way of eBay. It’s a lot of work but to get many messages like this makes it all worth while.

“Thank you, Gary, for offering your palms mail order. I have been following you online and your nursery experiences since the early 2000’s at least. I have never been able to make a trip to your nursery. I so look forward to trialing Sabal ‘Fat Boy’ and the Craven Co. provenance dwarf palmetto here in my microclimate in southwestern VA. I have been in love with the Sabal palmetto since I first hugged one at Disney World Florida in 1977 at 6 years old! Take care and thank you for the gift!”

With all the glorious rain and slow release fertilizer this summer these one-gallon NC native Sabal minor have really put on a great amount of growth, the best we have had in years!!! We have been potting these into 3-gallon containers this week but decided to put a few of these one-gallon on eBay. Ready to go in the ground and/ or 3- or 7-gallon pots.

COLD HARDY CONTAINER GROWN PALMS.
About us.
Gary’s Nursery, LLC, Since 1975.
We started growing cold hardy palms from seed 40 years ago. We sell wholesale to contractors and other nurseries as well as retail to the public on site, and on eBay.
All the palms we sell are grown from seed right here at our nursery in New Bern, NC and the mature specimen examples we show on eBay, our website and Facebook are ones we grew from seed and planted on our property or are photos of palms we have sold or have given to other folks at other locations.
We prefer to sell only palms that we grow that we have long term experience with here in zone 8 Eastern, NC. We encourage you to get to know your local nurseries, farmers and local horticulturalist to get an idea of your climate as far as low temperatures go. Many palms, even here in Eastern, NC, may require some form of Winter protection when young and /or first planted.
All through the years we have mainly sold our retail palms on site. At one time some years ago, we did do mail order. We constantly have customers driving long distances to purchase palms and have been asked to start making them available once again by shipping them through eBay this time.
We prefer to sell only palms that are mostly rooted out in their rigid nursery containers we grow them in. Some folks use grow bags which are just as good and may save a little on shipping by being able to pack more in a box.
