Every year at this point in the season I ask myself why I grow dahlias. In our 5b zone they have a short growing season and the tubers have to be dug up before the ground freezes. Then the tedious task of dividing the tubers starts. Each of the sweet potato looking tentacles in this photo will be a new plant next year. That’s the cool part about growing dahlias. You start with one tuber planted in the ground and at the end of the season it’s produced a bunch of babies that are an identical match to the parent plant. Certain tubers can be quite expensive, but if you have patience you can grow your garden size quite significantly in just a few years. Now I’m off to divide all these clumps into individual tubers, pack them away in my basement for the winter and figure out where I’m going to plant them next year. All because they are one of my favorite flowers and I can’t imagine not growing them.

Our stand received a little makeover today. We’ve started loading it with small fall wreathes and dried flower pumpkins. More will be added as the week goes on. Tomorrow (Sunday) we will have the last of our sunflowers and a few zinnia bunches as well as tomatoes and a variety of peppers. Stop by and see us!
