“I’d like to buy the world a Coke…”

This client had some really cool collectibles, like this one…a functional “Coke Machine” coin bank. It had lights and noises and the client told us numerous stories about their own childhood collectibles. We helped clear the estate. Part of that was organizing an estate sale, so that we could get the house empty and assist with staging and listing.

“I yam what I yam!” We love cool vintage finds like this Olive Oyl (Popeye’s girlfriend) pop-up toy. It’s old. It’s in good condition. It survived the packing and the unpacking, along with everything else, and it’s adorable.

Meow!

One of our repeat clients, who is 82 years old, had to move to another location. We managed her move journey a few years ago. As it turns out, she needed a different space to accommodate changes in her body, mobility and access to community. Sadly, the new residence only allows one pet and she had two. So, when she called and asked if we could help with specific tasks we said, of course. Those tasks included: estate clearing, packing, unpacking, moving, and removing remaining junk and donations, and rehoming her beautiful, gentle, young tabby named Max.

We hate this task. HOWEVER, we were successful. He is now living with a young man, and when they met in person, it was love at first sight. We are told his former sibling cat, Kali, is very happy in her new home and even happier to be a solo companion to our human client. They are both doing well after we unpacked and helped them settle in. She does get to see Max every now and again, which is also a lovely outcome.

Sometimes during our downsizing and move management projects we find interesting artifacts. Other times, while we are unpacking, we find weird and funny things that make us laugh while working. This one made me laugh and also think about the best jobs (working as a move manager ranks as the best job I ever had) and the worst jobs—which would have to be driving a cab in downtown Albany in the 80s.

Butterflies are free.

We were called to assist someone who relocated their home from Utah to Columbia County, so they could be closer grand children. We helped downsize and unpack, organize and did a few mini cleanouts. This delightful piece was beautiful, along with the rest of the art. We definitely enjoy senior move management and relocation, especially when we stumble on these interesting artifacts.

COOOOOKIEEEEEE!

I cannot tell you how many times I am stopped dead in my tracks by a toy from my past. Of course, this happens when we are immersed in a move management job. This client had so many cool toys from my Gen X childhood. This one in particular was set to be part of the clean out and junk haul, but we saved it for the grandchildren. Hopefully they will want it. Doubtful, but hopeful.

Who doesn’t love Charlie Brown? But more importantly, I think Lucy would be very helpful to those of us dealing with deep emotional attachment to stuff. I think she would advise people to Call Sheilah! She would tell them that they need assistance as they tackle their senior move management project; their downsizing project; their general clean out and all the tasks related to lightening the load. She might even say, “Call Sheilah! I know she will give you permission to lighten the load.”

We were working with a retired NYC fire fighter, helping to downsize, sort, pack and relocate to a local apartment in a new residence. My father was a NYC firefighter, too. I was not surprised to learn that my client’s kids had the same toys we did, firefighter stuff: helmets, hoses, trucks, sirens, ladders and our own special fireman lamp whose name was Alert, because the base of the lamp said “Ever Alert.” Google it. It’s quite popular on ebay.

We stumbled on these Life Magazines from 1943. There were about ten of them. All of them celebrated women, Black veterans, patriotism and the accomplishments of people for whom the odds were against. If only the celebration of what truly makes this country great, which is diversity, rich and deep history of different cultures and genders coming together, as well as our government supporting that excellence — if only it continued in earnest, our current situation would be something contained only in horror/fiction movies and books, instead of reality.
