🐑🧶 Sheep to Sweater | Part 1: From Raw Fleece to Beautiful Locks!

Come along on my sheep-to-sweater journey! From raw fleece to a finished garment…I’m taking you along for the entire process!

Finally took advantage of this beautiful day and settled in on the deck to spend some time with this gorgeous CVM/Wensleydale wool fleece I picked up from Cactus Hill Farm a year ago! ☀️

Today’s project…skirting and opening up all those beautiful locks!

I prefer to open the locks by hand as I go. It’s a little more time-consuming, but it helps remove dirt, vegetable matter (VM), and shorter cuts while allowing me to pick out any fibers I don’t want making their way into my finished yarn.

Of course, I had a little four-legged supervision along the way! 🐾😂

Next up…washing, combing, spinning, and eventually knitting this beautiful fleece into a wearable garment! I’m planning to leave all those gorgeous natural shades of gray just as they are. 🤍🩶

From raw fleece to a finished piece of clothing…it’s definitely a slow process, but that’s part of what makes it so special.

So many hours go into creating something from start to finish, but it’s a process I absolutely LOVE! ❤️

Three months ago, while we were in Mackinaw City, Michigan, Gypsy met a new friend named Winston. 🐾❤️

Fast forward 3 months, several states and a whole lot of miles later… and who pulls into the SAME campground as us here in New Mexico?! Winston and his humans! 😂

What are the chances?!

From their first meeting in Michigan to their reunion in New Mexico… Gypsy may have gotten quite a bit bigger, but she was definitely happy to see her friend. 🥹🐶

One of my favorite things about this RV life is the people—and the pups—you meet along the way, never knowing when your paths might cross again. ❤️

Remember that BIG upgrade I said we had coming before we left the Angel Fire Brinkley Rally? Well…here it is! 🙌

Honestly, this upgrade was one of the biggest reasons we ended up at the rally in the first place!

We upgraded the suspension on our Brinkley G4100 to Roadmaster slipper springs and shocks AND made the jump to DeeMaxx disc brakes! 🎉

With as much as we travel—and as big and heavy as our home-on-wheels is—we’ve been wanting to make some upgrades to the things underneath that you don’t necessarily see, but that can make a HUGE difference going down the road.

We’re really excited to get some miles on this new setup and see how she rides and stops! 🚛💨

Sometimes the best RV upgrades aren’t the pretty ones you can see…they’re the ones underneath keeping everything rolling! ❤️

From “I have absolutely NO project in mind for this yarn” 😂 …to this. ❤️🧶

My finished Thalia Sweater by Pearlbyrae!

This one has a little bit of a travel story woven into it.

It started last year at the Taos Wools Festival in Taos, NM, where I fell in love with the most LUSCIOUS alpaca, silk, merino & yak yarn from Vortexyarns. Did I have a plan for it? Of course not. 😂 I just knew it needed to come home with me.

Fast forward to our travels through Goshen, Indiana, where I wandered into Kindred Wool Co. and found the perfect yarn to pair with it, a merino & firestar blend— spun at Red Hill Fiber and dyed by Indigo Guinea Fiber, both in Indiana.

Two yarns.

Found in two different states.

About 1,300 miles apart.

Roughly $200 in yarn and MANY hours of knitting later…they became this. 🥰

And I absolutely LOVE how it turned out.

One of my favorite things about traveling full-time is collecting beautiful yarn along the way. Now when I wear this sweater, it isn’t just something I knit—it’s a little piece of our travels that I get to wear. ❤️🧶🚐

From skeins with no plan…to a finished piece I’ll have for years.

She’s 6 months old today! Over the last few months she’s been a lot of chaos 😂 and even more love 💗….wouldn’t trade her for anything….even though she does like to test me most days. Shes full of energy and curiosity. She’s definitely got a bad case of FOMO-she loves watching EVERYTHING. The activity in our recent campground has kept her on her toes 😂

Another little RV transformation! 🙌

This time…the dinesk got an upgrade!

We decided the original setup just wasn’t making the best use of the space, so out came the dinesk table and in came a counter-height table, along with a second narrower table.

We also swapped out the dining chairs for height-adjustable swivel chairs—and what a difference! 😍

Not only did this give us more room between the island and dining area, but raising the seating height completely changed our view. Now when we’re sitting down to eat, we can actually enjoy those big beautiful windows instead of looking up and out of them. 😂

The narrower table also keeps the area feeling much more open without sacrificing the dining/work space we wanted.

It’s funny how a few little changes can make an RV feel so much bigger and function so much better. 🥰

Slowly but surely, we’re making this space work perfectly for the way WE live in it. ❤️🏕️

And yes…there are more projects coming. 😂

Remember when I said, “Yep…we were THOSE people cutting wood at the campground”? 😂🪚

Well…here’s what all that noise was for! 👏

For those who aren’t familiar with toy haulers, the very back section of the garage floor—called the dovetail—slopes down toward the ramp to make loading toys easier.

Super handy for loading if you haul toys.
Not so handy when you want to use that area as actual living space. 😏

And in an RV, wasted space is basically a crime. 😂

So naturally, we decided to fix it!

A little measuring…a LOT of figuring out angles…cutting, sanding, fitting, refitting…and probably a few “well, that’s not gonna work” moments later 🤣…we built a custom wedge to cover the dovetail and give us one continuous, level floor.

And WHAT a difference! 🙌

That awkward sloped area is now completely usable, the room feels bigger, and while we were at it we gave the whole space a little freshening up. ✨

Living in an RV definitely teaches you to look at every little space and think…

“Hmmmm…how can we make THAT work better?” 😂

I’d say this one was worth being those people at the campground for! 🥰

-Slowly working on my Thalia sweater-love the little flecks of gold sparkle in the yarn!
-We’re moving along on a couple of RV “makeover projects”-just waiting on a few more items to be delivered then I will share the completed projects.
-Still using my socks as a quick knit when I just want something simple to throw some stitches in
-Planning to start a baby blanket in pink for a gift, a cardigan for John in charcoal grey and another for me with the red yarn I picked up in Michigan
