Psychiatry has long operated on a neurotransmitter model of mental illness too little serotonin causes depression, too much dopamine causes psychosis. That framework is being fundamentally displaced. A sweeping 2025 meta-analysis from the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, analyzing neuroimaging, biomarker, and post-mortem brain tissue data from over 50,000 patients across 12 major psychiatric conditions, found that neuroinflammation chronic activation of microglial cells and elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in the brain is present in virtually every major mental health disorder studied, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, OCD, anorexia, and autism spectrum disorder.

The evidence points to neuroinflammation not merely as a correlate of mental illness, but as a primary causal driver. Chronically activated microglia release IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-, which disrupt synaptic transmission, impair neurogenesis, destroy myelin integrity, and critically suppress the tryptophan-kynurenine pathway, redirecting the building blocks of serotonin synthesis toward the production of neurotoxic quinolinic acid instead. This single metabolic shift may explain both the serotonin deficit in depression and the concurrent glutamate dysfunction in psychosis unified by a common inflammatory trigger.

What ignites the neuroinflammation? The German team identified a convergent set of upstream triggers: gut dysbiosis, early life adversity, chronic sleep disruption, obesity, viral infections particularly herpesvirus family members, and air pollution. Anti-inflammatory interventions including minocycline, celecoxib, omega-3 fatty acids, and microbiome modulation are now in Phase II and III trials for multiple psychiatric conditions.

Treating mental illness as brain inflammation may be the reframing that psychiatry has needed for a generation.

THE FOLIC ACID EPIDEMIC

In 1998, the United States Government. forced all cereals and refined flours to be "enriched" with Folic Acid to prevent birth defects.

Sounded like a good idea.

The problem is that folic acid is not natural. Its a synthetic lab vitamin.

In nature, this vitamin exists as Folato in green leaves, liver, avocados.

For your body to use synthetic folic acid from bread or cheap pills, your liver has to turn it into active folato using an enzyme called MTHFR.

Heres the genetic trap:

It is estimated that between 30% and 40% of the population have a mutation in the MTHFR gene.

If you have this mutation, your body cant process synthetic folic acid.

Whats going on then?

Non-metabolized folic acid floats in your blood, blocking your cellular receptors.

Your body cant do "Methylation" the cellular process to detoxify heavy metals and create neurotransmitters.

Outcome: Toxins accumulate, suffer from unexplained anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, and thyroid problems.

Youre eating "healthy" enriched whole wheat bread, box cereals and youre slowly poisoning yourself because your genetics dont recognize lab chemist.

How to Read Labels:

The study published in the journal Foods journal 2020 by researchers including Valentina Nanni and Angelo Gismondi found that oregano Origanum vulgare extract has strong anticancer effects on melanoma skin cancer cells. In laboratory experiments, a concentration of about 10 mg/mL reduced melanoma cell viability by around 80% within 48 hours, while showing minimal toxicity to normal cells. This suggests the extract may selectively target cancer cells. The effect is linked to bioactive compounds in oregano such as carvacrol and thymol.

The researchers discovered that oregano extract kills cancer cells by activating programmed cell death pathways, including both apoptosis and necroptosis. It increases oxidative stress inside the cells, leading to mitochondrial damage and DNA breakage. As a result, cancer cells either self-destruct or swell and burst when normal death mechanisms fail. This multi-target action makes oregano extract a promising candidate for future anticancer research, although these findings are currently limited to lab studies and not yet confirmed in humans.
