As I look outside my window, I see sunshine, blue skies and green grass - powerful signs of growth, hope and life. But I realize that not everyone feels this way.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month—something that many people silently struggle with.
I’m not an expert by any means, but I can share that I’ve experienced secondhand how the smallest act can make the greatest impact.
(Shared with our daughter Jasmine’s permission. Some names have been changed to protect privacy.)
October 2025: Jasmine was going to class early to talk to one of her college professors. As she was walking to class, a girl she knew (Gemma) ran up and told her of a critical situation that was currently unfolding.
There was a girl (Karlie) who was having a moment that could have ended tragically. Jasmine and Gemma approached Karlie and did what I hope many of us would have done in that same moment. They spoke to her and listened. They stayed with her until help arrived. And maybe most importantly, they showed her kindness and compassion.
We may not always realize it in the moment but sometimes the smallest gesture can make the biggest impact. You never truly know what someone may be going through, and these quiet acts can mean far more than we can imagine. A smile. A gentle word. A hug.
If you are struggling, please reach out to someone. You don’t need to go through it alone.
Karlie is still here and I believe our world is a better place with her in it.
