PSA for the newbies to gardening, canning and food preserving! I can’t stop ya if you want to be a rebel canner, but I will highly discourage it. This is just one example of one of the canning rules and why we follow them!

I know I’m not alone here! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Who else tells themselves lies before going to the garden, or do you have any other “toxic garden traits” to share?

PS- don’t do this to your poor clothes… Just go back for the basket! 😂

I am picking the rest of my soybeans/edamame today. Well, most of it. I’m going to leave a few plants for the beans to mature completely and start drying so I can save the seeds for next year.

The method I’m using today is different than picking beans for the plant to produce more… but this will be plenty of edamame in the freezer for us for a year. I’m using some handheld clippers to cut the plant at the soil level and leaving the roots in place to decompose. Then I’m pulling all the beans from each plant and dropping them in the bucket between my legs, and tossing the stripped plant off to the side so I can chop them up and add them to the compost pile so they can feed the soil later somewhere else in the garden.

How many of you grow edamame in your garden, and how much do you plant for your family? Do you plant a second round in the summer or just one harvest?

Oh, and if anyone has a successful way to control the ants in your garden, I’m all ears! These ants are horrible!!!

Mixed in with other “weeds” in an area we didn’t intend for anything green to be growing is this plant. It isn’t getting tall, nor are the flowers big at all. They are actually very tiny/dainty. I was curious, so I used Google camera to find out what it is… before I say what Google told me, I’m curious if any of you folks more familiar with Georgia natives and plants used for medicinal benefits are familiar with this and can verify what Google says. I can get other photos if necessary.

These little violets always get a chuckle out of me when I'm in the garden. I don't know about you, but every time I look at them I feel like I have slipped down a rabbit hole into Wonderland and they will start talking to me!

Ray and I went to Tractor Supply this morning to refill a propane tank so I could smoke meats today… and, well, things escalated quickly.

He wanted a tangerine tree and the banana tree (which has three pups already so it’s like a 4 for 1 deal), I wanted a variegated pink lemon tree, and then we were accidentally charged for one more citrus tree than what we intended so I picked out an amber sweet orange tree.

Several hundred dollars later we are home and I’m getting the smoker started and wondering how the heck that happened. 😳

After a second load of wood chips was dropped yesterday by the same arborist, I am taking the rain free day today to work on moving wood chips into the garden around some of the raised beds where weeds are growing through the current layer of wood chips. These wood chips will break down in place over time, feeding the microbiology in the soil, giving that layer of top soil a protective coat so it won’t wash away in the torrential rains or blow away later when it is dry and windy, and it will slowly become a much thicker and healthier layer of top soil. Oh, and even after the current rains decide to stop, this layer of wood chips will mean I won’t have to water the plants that are planted directly in the ground, since this layer of wood chips prevents water from evaporating from the soil as fast as it does when the soil is bare.

I have been praying to the Gardening Gods for a load of wood chips to be dropped here for the past month or more (really since we finished off all the other piles of wood chips around here). Today my prayer was answered! This is the second time I have had a load of wood chips dropped here by an arborist using the Chip Drop website, and while I wasn’t super impressed by the first load (I think their blades or something needed adjusting), this load is chopped finely and pretty uniform. Much easier to shovel and rake!

I’m gonna admit, I volunteered to pay $20 to Chip Drop to get a load (the fee the arborist would have had to pay to use the website to find a drop location they could dump), and I didn’t *have* to volunteer to pay that, but it supposedly increases your chance of getting a delivery…. And honestly, for this quantity of wood chips to be delivered, $20 is a bargain!
