This is pretty much the coolest thing ever: thermal imaging photos of our honeybee hives! Here's more from our farm teammate and beekeeper, S!

"As spring seems like it’s finally and truly starting to come back around, I’ve been wondering which bees have made it through this winter and will fly as a part of our farm space again this year. On the frostiest of these last winter nights honeybees will cluster into a tight ball inside the hive for warmth, vibrating their wings, and rotating places within the group, to maintain 90 degree warmth for themselves and the queen bee. After 3 months of allowing the bees space for their clustering process it’s hard to know which hives have made it.

Luckily, while it’s still a tiny bit early to open up those boxes and peak inside for signs of survival, the stark difference in temperature between a bee cluster and early morning apiary air before the sun is hanging high in the sky means that technology could help me out. These pictures were taken with a thermal imaging camera loaned to me by our local bee club, and reveal the heat of bee clusters within my apiary boxes through color differentiation. As of now, all 6 hives in the apiary are still alive and are very very cozy warm!"

"I’ve learned to let the crops drive the cooking," says Maya. "I have a couple of go-to recipes for each vegetable and whatever vegetable shows up determines what I cook for the week."

Find out what Maya and her partner Jon call the "unsung heroes of seasonal eating" in our CSA champions rundown.

Farmer’s Share

Our CSA starts this week and we're so grateful for our CSA members. This study by the National Farmers Union shows that on average, farmers only receive 15 cents of every dollar you spent on food. With our CSA, our members not only ensure their farmers get every cent of their food dollar, they also have a direct relationship with the passionate people who grow their food - that's us! https://nfu.org/farmers-share/

Happy Farmer Friday! Today we’re featuring Liz Whitehurst, from Owl's Nest Farm in Upper Marlboro, MD. Liz is the farmer liaison for Fair Farms, meaning she helps to convene our Farmer Advisory Council, and she also sits on the Fair Farms Steering Committee. Liz utilizes healthy soils practices on her farm by rotating crops after each growing season, planting cover crops between seasons, and by applying organically-approved fertilizers and nutrients to her crops. By implementing these sustainable practices on her farm, Liz is protecting her soil health, the quality of water in her local watershed, and the greater Chesapeake Bay region!
