Very well put! It's nice to know where the foods you are consuming are coming from
Why does beef bought directly from a ranch cost more than in the grocery store?
It may seem that grocery store beef is less expensive on the surface. Primarily because their beef inventory comes from large-scale packing houses that provide supply chain efficiencies reducingg costs and allowing retail stores to price individual cuts for what appears to be less.
**Interesting fact: In the US there are four major beef packing companies that dominate the market, controlling over 80% of the beef processing: Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Cargill and National Beef Packing Company. These "Big Four" control beef pricing, supply chains and distribution that often lead to lower prices for cattle producers and higher prices for consumers.
The most economical way to purchase beef is in bulk from a ranch. While purchasing a whole, 1/2 or 1/4 of a cow requires a large up front investment the price per-pound is competitive or often LOWER than grocery stores.
Buying in bulk allows for long-term savings compared to purchasing individual cuts at retail prices.
What benefits do I get by purchasing directly from a ranch?
You are purchasing beef from ONE animal vs. grocery stores that include cuts from lots of different animals and producers that have differing practices.
Ranch-direct beef is often fresher, as it doesn't go through long supply chains to reach the consumer.
Buying direct allows you to know exactly where your beef comes from, how the cattle were raised and what they were fed. Know your rancher!
Purchase in bulk means you have a fully stocked freezer, reducing frequent grocery store trips and offering meal prep convenience.
Buying from a ranch supports local ranchers that supports local economies.
