The foliage is soft and velvety. The leaves are opposite along the lower stem, becoming alternate as the plant matures, and are covered in fine hairs that give them a โ€œdownyโ€ appearance. The stems are also noticeably fuzzy and sturdy.

At this time of the year, many natives begin to emerge. Here are some pointers for how to identify Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) early on. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ

The leaves are opposite along the stem with a slightly toothed margin and a soft, somewhat fuzzy texture. When crushed, the leaves release a distinctive, pleasant fragrance. As the plant continues to grow, its square stems and branching habit become more apparent, helping with identification even before the showy blooms appear later in the season.

At this time of year, the Roundstone staff gets many requests to identify plants that are beginning to develop. Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium) is one of the easiest to identify base on leaf characteristics. ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฑ

The elongated leaves are similar to irises with straight veins and a waxy covering to the leaf. Look closely at the edges of the leaves (margins), there are spines.
