Today, the whole RNS family is on the farm to tag monarchs together!

Family tagging day has become our favorite day of the monarch season. The kids get to help find butterflies, learn how to ID them, and see what goes into tagging a monarch before it continues its migration.

And, of course, things get pretty competitive around here... Check out these pictures!

Monarchs need more than milkweed! Can you spot the other native plants monarchs are enjoying in these pictures?

Milkweed is essential because it’s the only group of plants monarch caterpillars can eat. Female monarchs also lay their eggs on milkweed.

Adult monarchs need nectar, too. Throughout their migration, they rely on a wide variety of flowering plants for the energy they need to travel. Their favorites on our farm are Showy Tickseed, Lemon Mint, Joe Pye W**d, New England Aster, and Spiked Blazing Star.

A diverse native planting can provide nectar throughout the growing season and support other pollinators and wildlife that share the same habitat.

Why do we tag monarchs?

Every fall, monarchs across the eastern US begin their journey south to their overwintering grounds in Mexico. Some travel hundreds, even thousands, of miles to get there. So, why tag them?

When we tag a monarch, we give it a small tag with a unique identification number. If that monarch is found again, researchers can see where it was tagged and where it was found. This helps us learn more about how far they travel, the routes they take, and where they stop along the way.

The information helps researchers better understand monarch migration and where habitat is most important. This is especially important as monarch populations continue to face challenges. Monarchs are currently being proposed for protection under the Endangered Species Act, making research and monitoring more important than ever.

All of our monarch work is led by Charlie Logsdon. Charlie runs our tagging program and spends countless hours in the field collecting migration data, photographing monarchs, and sharing what he’s learned with others.

Monarch ID Guide!

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are one of the most recognizable butterflies in North America, but accurate identification is important when we’re tagging.

Adult monarchs have orange wings with prominent black veins and a black outer margin marked with white spots. Males can be identified by the two black scent patches on the hindwings. Females lack these spots and typically have thicker black wing veins.

Wing conditions can also tell us about a butterfly’s age and time spent migrating. Fresh monarchs have bright, intact wings, while older butterflies often show fading, tears, and worn edges.

Take a closer look at the key feature that helps us tell males and females apart. Knowing these details helps to accurately identify each monarch before it is tagged and released.

Happy Showy Tickseed season!

Showy Tickseed (Bidens aristosa) is more than a beautiful native wildflower, it is helping power Monarchs across Kentucky.

After we documented heavy use of Showy Tickseed fields by migrating Monarchs on the farm, we began donating Showy Tickseed seed to Kentucky Fish & Wildlife and other partners to establish Monarch Fueling and Tagging Sites across the state. These sites provide critical late-season nectar for migrating Monarchs.

Tomorrow, our restoration ecologist, Robert Hoffman, will be speaking at the Nashville Native Plant Symposium about successful native seeding projects in urban and suburban landscapes.

He’ll cover site preparation and installation techniques, common challenges, and ways to help communities respond positively to rewilding projects.

The conference is sold out, but we’re looking forward to having Robert represent our team and share his experience and expertise.
