Weekly Fact: It gets hard to keep up with posts in the summer because of how much is going on. 7/29 we had a porch fire at the new weaving studio that is still under construction. Thankfully the damage was limited to the middle section of the porch. As near as anyone can tell, it was spontaneous combustion from the heat, humidity, and possibly stain. 8/6, Diamonte finally had her cria but he was dysmature and she likely had a partial uterine torsion leading to a bit of dystocia. He was born late in the day, and we fought to save him for almost a week before we lost him 8/11. We lost a lot of sleep tending to them every 2-4 hours around the clock and it's been hard to recover.
Overall, the goats are doing well. The yearlings and the 2 year old billies decided to get wormy so we are treating them. But the one group we haven't treated as of yet is the kids from this spring. Every single flipping summer come late July to August we have fought parasites in our kids. This year, we started using a product called Bioworma in the nanny and kid feed. It's a feed through fungus that attacks the GI worms on pasture. We've had a hot dry pasture killing summer. And usually that would be a recipe for disaster. But we're now firm believers in Bioworma. It can only be used out on pasture in weather that allows the fungus to grow, but wow...all 14 of the spring kids and their mothers are fat and healthy. Needless to say, we'll be implementing it with the rest of the goats.
