We got VE corn!
Our 109 day corn that was planted 9.5 days ago has emerged (VE). While a good amount has emerged, we have areas and spots where it hasn’t and I believe it’s because the moisture level appears to be all over the place, even within a few feet of each other. The corn that hasn’t emerged has either just begun to sprout or not at all yet and is in completely dry dirt. The seedling depth between the two stages of our corn is nearly the same so I don’t think it’s planting related with uneven depths.
We did, unexpectedly, receive 0.25” of rain last night and with more (hopefully nothing too severe) on the way this morning and later this afternoon into overnight.
Our corn-on-corn in the south field has spots of corn just beginning to emerge or are incredibly close to emerging while again, some seeds are just beginning to sprout or are just laying in dry dirt.
I’m excited about this 109 day corn for a few reasons. It’s a new number from Golden Harvest (G09M19-AA) with a lot of promise and is the longest maturity corn we’ve planted on our farm, to my knowledge. It has great scoring on seedling vigor and emergence, drought tolerance, dry down and test weight to name a few. It comes with their Agrisure Above (AA) ground insect protection and I can’t wait to see how it performs on my acres this year.
Soybean Note: We got the beans drilled between Tuesday-Wednesday afternoon this past week and as of last night, the seeds have begun to sprout as well! 3-4 days post planting. I was pleasantly surprised to see, at least in the area I checked, moisture down in the seedbed.
