More progress being made on the barn, with concrete under the overhangs poured and curing. These will be loafing areas for the girls and the long span of the overhang means there will be parts of the concrete that get no direct heat during the high summer sun, but the south side will get warmed by the low winter sun.

Kidding season means an abundance of goat milk and sometimes that means it's time to make yogurt and Stirling hopes ever so much for some sort of accident that leads to the entire batch landing in his mouth 😄

Tahiti enjoying a sunny morning over 18 months after she was given a prognosis of maybe two months. We're so grateful to the veterinarians at UC Davis who offered us the chance to laser treat her cancer when it wasn't yet a very common option for goats as her two treatments have turned out to be very effective at giving us more time with our sweet girl. She continues to enjoy being spoiled rotten and we continue to enjoy spoiling her.

The barn isn't finished yet, but the county said as long as they can see all of the metal, it was fine to start putting hay in it. A good amount of the barn design was around being able to get a stack retriever in and out of this barn- our old barn was one inch too short to get a stack retriever in, which meant having stacks delivered in front of the barn, then breaking them down and building them back inside the barn. It turns out that we aren't getting any younger, so this barn needed to be much more functional.

I was holding my breath a little bit when the first retriever showed up because there have been so many unintended consequences along our rebuilding journey that I was worried that I may not have considered something very important. But! It went perfectly! We have five 80 stacks in the barn now with room for more and it is such a joy to walk into a barn that smells like hay for the first time in almost six years. And Fergus has the biggest haystack to play on, which makes him the happiest dog. Huzzah!

That face when suddenly, and very unexpectedly, you exist.

This flashy blue eyed, polled, single doe kid brings our smallest kidding season since 2003 to a conclusion with a total of 28 kids- 16 bucks, 12 does. I hadn't meant to have such a small kidding season, but health issues with our families pulled a good deal of attention from the farm last fall and into spring- I'm not sure that a larger kidding season would have been all that easy to handle. I am planning for this fall already, with high hopes of being able to make sure everyone I want to get settled actually does 😃

The barn saga continued...

I last posted about the barn project in mid-November, as we were waiting to hear from the barn company when the rest of the barn would show up. While speaking with them, it turns out they had "found" two whole coils of the Sierra Green metal I had been told was not available earlier in the year. To make up for the delay, they would replace the red sheets they had delivered with the green I had originally wanted. It was going to cost us extra to have the red endwall taken down and replaced, but when we are talking about years and years of having the color I originally wanted, it seemed worth it. A new delivery date of just before Thanksgiving was set.

We got the delivery, and when my contractor went through the packages of metal, we had been delivered exactly the same pieces as we already had in red, but this time in green. So one and one third end walls, zero sidewalls. How fun!

We went around and around again with the company, and got a date in late January when the metal would be ready. This time, my contractor was going to go pick the metal up to save some time. The front office and the back lot of the metal place hadn't talked with each other, so he was told that there wasn't anything for him to pick up. Some frantic phone calls and it turned out the order was ready after all. Phew! We finally had all the metal for the project a mere five and a half months after it was all supposed to be delivered.

Of course our incredibly patient contractor had had to schedule other projects in the meantime because he didn't know when he would actually have all of the parts of the barn, so it took a bit for him to get back to working on it. We are now getting closer and closer to having a barn, and who knows, by the time kidding season is over, it might be ready to use 🙃

Oh happy day! Triplet does out of Castle Rock Flopsy Lopsy (Castle Rock Beam Me Up x Castle Rock Snow Shoe Hare) sired by Urban Acres Sky Finley (Urban Acres CRF-BH Skyggen x Urban Acres ASD Goldilocks). Triplet does are our favorite kind of litter, but they're especially welcome when kidding season has so far produced 73% bucks!

Two of these girls will be available for new homes
