Houses, parking lots, and commercial businesses keep creeping closer to us every year. People talk about profits, seeing only numbers instead of frozen mornings, busted knuckles, or the quiet pride that comes from farming. Farming demands more than strength—it requires heart. It asks for patience when rain refuses to fall or falls all at once. Some seasons, nature delivers blow after blow, and nothing seems fair. Still, farmers put on their boots and get to work again. Because food has to come from somewhere. Because quitting feels like letting down everyone who came before and everyone who eats because of this land. I love knowing that what’s grown here ends up on my neighbors’ tables. I love watching the seasons change and seeing the land respond to honest effort with real food. Farms only survive when the people around them decide they matter. As the New Year approaches, I’m asking that you choose to support local farms. Cook more meals at home and let farm stands inspire what you eat. Stand with the families who grow your food. Bring your children and grandchildren to a farm so they can see where food comes from. Farms don’t vanish overnight—they fade when people stop noticing. Please pay attention. Choose local. Eat local. Help protect land that has fed generations and can continue to do so if we allow it.
