Today my son took his very first elk on my birthday. I got him a private land voucher knowing we could hunt this last week of December and high hopes of him being able to get one for my birthday on Christmas Day and he did! This was by far the best Christmas/birthday present I’ve ever had!

Congratulations to my boy for taking this old buck on the evening of opening day!! After passing on a couple of smaller bucks and holding out paid off. After spotting the buck moving down the ridge to the sage flat we made our move and waited for him to pop out. Migz put the Gunwerks to work and make the perfect shot putting this guy to rest and meat in the freezer. Good shooting!

Congratulations to James Merenda on this great bull. We turned this bull up at 1000 + yards and quickly made a stalk. We got in to position and James dropped a solid 450 yard bomb sinking this guy in his tracks. After that we had my dad and nephew come in with the horses to make quick work on getting this guy back to the meat locker. Good job and thanks to all involved!

On day 3, 3 bulls hit the dirt making our hunting camp go 100% on public land for the first rifle season. As I sit here at the end of this super long day I still can’t believe how blessed I am to have taken this magnificent bull on the last morning of the last day. For something I never in a million years would have thought would have worked out, did! After seening the cows and contemplating on pursuing the cows or calling it a hunt 1 single bugle turned everything around. I pursued the bugle and suddenly saw the herd headed right for me. I quickly set up and ranged where I figured he would step out. Sure enough he followed his cows right to 63 yards, let 1 cow call out and let the arrow fly. I saw the arrow enter and knew I made a perfect shot. I backed out and gave him some time and waited for the pack out crew to help. The longest hour of my life went and finally started the tracking. It did not take long to find him and the rest is history. It doesn’t not matter how many elk you see or encounters you have in a hunt stay positive and be persistent because it can all change at that very last moment. Thanks to my dad and sisters for helping get this big ol guy out!
