🐑 Why does wool felt?
This is one of the questions we get asked the most — especially when people see us turning loose wool into solid blankets and rugs.
Every wool fiber is covered in tiny microscopic scales. You can’t see them with your eyes, but they’re there.
When wool gets:
💧 Warm water
🫧 Soap
✋ Friction & movement
those tiny scales begin to open and grab onto each other.
As the fibers continue rubbing together, they tighten and lock permanently into one solid piece of fabric. That process is called felting.
Different breeds felt differently too:
✨ Fine wool felts fast and tight
✨ Long wool breeds add texture and strength
✨ Some wool barely felts at all
That’s why breed selection matters so much when we create rugs and blankets.
Our Gotland and Wensleydale wool gives us softness, texture, and strength, while our Valais wool adds those beautiful long locks and dramatic texture everyone loves.
Felting is honestly a little bit science… and a little bit art. 🧶
Once wool is fully felted, it becomes:
✔️ Extremely durable
✔️ Warm without heavy weight
✔️ Naturally water resistant
✔️ Breathable
✔️ Long lasting
And the coolest part?
People have been using this same natural process for thousands of years.
No glue.
No synthetic fibers.
Just wool doing what wool naturally wants to do. 🐑✨
