Two months ago after some extended time off, our Peppa returned to training under the very capable hands of Catherine Johnson . And this past Friday she was back in the arena showing in the Derby at the 100x Show in Waco. Her performance had its ups and downs, but we're just so proud of the grit she demonstrated after losing a slider and sending it flying (which you can see in the slow mo part of the video during the second rundown). Despite having a badly damaged hoof, she powered on and completed two more stops - far from her best, but pretty darn good given the circumstances. And she still ended up in the money!
The farrier patched her up with a good deal of epoxy (there's a pic toward the end) and said she should be fine.
A big thank you to Mathieu, who has always believed in this little mare and to the rest of the crew at Mathieu Buton Reining Horses ! They're awesome!

Over the years, we've gone through the "first show" experience with many youngsters. All have demonstrated some level of anxiety upon arrival at the showgrounds. Usually, just mild lookiness. But some paced. Some wouldn't eat or drink for awhile. Some called out for friends.
But Razz? Despite this being her first out-of-town trip, she got off the trailer like an old pro. Walked calmly to her stall. Not one second of hesitation or stress. She patiently waited for her feed bag to get hung...then immediately took to munching away.
Pep, on the other hand, knows the routine. Other than being a little more impatient about getting her hay net hung, she's also a rock star.

You couldn't ask for a cooler gray color than this gorgeous 2025 Dun It For Whizkey filly!

And with over $46.88 Million in NRHA offspring earnings among the individuals in the first three generations of her pedigree, you can be sure she's bred to perform!

Note: The video segments are from her first experience working in the round pen. Clearly, she was ensuring she kept her eye above the level of the solid pane... keeping a lookout for barnmates. 😐

For a three-year-old kid who's never been farther than 12 miles down the road, the past ten days were quite the experience for Mr. Mo. The barn was a hub of non-stop hustle and bustle, and we think he handled it pretty darn well!

Such respect and appreciation goes out to Catherine Johnson and the whole crew at Mathieu Buton Reining Horses. You couldn't find a harder working bunch of peeps!

SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA LET THE PRETTY ONES GO...

You can't keep 'em all.
So today one of the little sweeties we raised moved south to her new family. In her honor I thought I'd draft a few lyrics about bidding her farewell... with the help of Mr. Chat and Ms. Suno. After the fact I realized I forgot to tell my a.i. friends that she is a horse, but I think they did an extraordinary job of embellishing my words and adding some cool melody and vocals.

Our lovely Lucille... When your sweet 2 y.o. is a size XXL, you worry about her future as a reining horse. Will she be too big to look/feel smooth? Will she have foot speed? Will she be athletic?
Well... after just eight weeks in training, she's saying, "Mom/Dad. Don't worry about me. I got this." She makes my heart happy.
