Confession time:
I like to bitch with the best of them. Yet, even as I bitch the ole brain gears are turning as I brainstorm for the solutions of what's causing the bitching. The latest obsession is the price of food. Good healthy food my husband and I need to stay healthy.
Have you checked out the price of yogurt, butter, and milk lately? Right now, the trend of horror is the beef situation. But the full on attack of diary farms has been going on for years.
But as always, there are small farmers working far away from the corporate farming and are able to provide small amounts of raw milk to a handful of customers. I've put off getting milk because of the inconvenience. Going to the grocery store and buying items is easier than veering off to the farm and picking up one item.
BUT, with two gallons of raw milk, I'm able to scoop off the cream and make yogurt and butter. I'm really not scared of farm fresh items, especially since my feed is full of recalled food items, but I have taken the time to lightly pasteurize the milk. This is due to my husband's heart condition and my diabetes and Graves disease. Our immune system isn't really kicking ass and taking names these days.
The cream and milk tastes amazing. The yogurt is more runny than I prefer but I'll research how to rectify that. This doesn't take up too much time, saves money, and not only supports a local small farmer but takes my money out of the corporate farming fiasco. Imagine if a good chunk of the population followed suit.
I, like most people, enjoy complaining but I also believe if you want things to change you have to do something different.
