Taking back some of production fields from the wilds! Last year we left it just sitting there. We didn’t have enough time to start veggies or think of planting any with me still working off the farm and Michael Love having hip surgery.
It’s a slow movement back into food production but it’s moving in the right direction. I picked up a lot of rock piles I had left behind through the years. Many of them with old sea fossils. It’s amazing how glaciers carved out the landscapes here and what they left behind.
This field will soon be tilled and planted and hoping in the near future we can stop tilling it and just maintain it. This is one of 4 fields to take back for food production.

Day 2 of 7, celebrating International Heritage Breed week! What do I have for you today you ask? I'm glad you asked. Let me introduce you to the Ancona duck. It's on the Livestock Conservancy list as a watched breed. It's teetering on the edge of promising numbers or it could go into critical need of help. I have been raising this breed for about 10 years. Known as the "cow duck" because of its black and white color design, it's by far, one of my favorites. It can come in many combinations, white/black, white/lilac, white/blue, white/chocolate and tricolored. Their bills and feet are bright orange/red with black spots. Cutest ducks ever...
Thought to be from Britain, evidence now suggests that they were actually an American bird developed from several types of standard duck breeds here in New York.
They are exceptional egg layers, laying around 210-280 eggs a year. They grow quickly, with high quality, lean meat unlike the fattier birds like Pekins. They are great foragers, docile in nature and also make great pets.
When I first started raising Anconas, they were in critical numbers and much harder to find. I was shipping in eggs from the Carolinas back then and incubating eggs. Nothing is more sweet than a duckling after it has first hatched.
Sadly I have lost many over the past few years to fox and am down to just 2 young females. I'm bringing in a small flock in a few weeks and starting over. I can't wait for them to arrive. I have missed having my large flock around to eat slugs and weeds from the gardens.

It is International Heritage Livestock Week beginning today and we here at Silverfox Farm like to celebrate that!
One of the chickens we raise is the Bielefelder Kennhuhn, developed in Germany in the 1970’s.
We have a line that was part of the imports of this bird from Germany in 2012, thanks to Greenfire Farm.
They are known as the Uber chicken. They lay up to 230 eggs a year, have large meaty carcasses, autosex-so you know from hatch if they are male or female and are gentle, docile giants. We have been raising them for a number of years and can’t find one bad thing about them. We raise them here for meat and eggs.

Super bummed we couldn’t make it to Lilac Festivals farmers market this week. It’s just too cold to have houseplants and tender herbs out the next few days. Sorry guys! The weather this spring just is not cooperating!

Where are we going to be this weekend?!
You can find us in Holland, NY, at their Tulip Festival. This festival brings in thousands of people and we made sure we had lots of houseplants! We may even bring our farm grown herb plants as well!

One of the farms major goals is to get a barn built to make life on the farm a little easier this year. We need a place for livestock feed storage and a place to work with our rare goats. Each plant purchase from us, isn’t just you buying a plant. It’s you supporting a conservation farm, it’s you supporting our capabilities to financially care, breed and help save a breed from going extinct. Our San Clemente Goats and many other breeds appreciate all of your support!

Here’s a sneak peak at some of what we have to bring to the Holland, NY Tulip Festival… please share!
