Unless isolated, zinnias cross pollinate easily so when I saved seed last year I knew the mix this year would be different… and that’s exactly what I was hoping for!

What bloomed this year is a delightful mix of colors, with many blooms bigger than my hand!

A couple notes on saving seed:

1. Waiting until the seed head is mostly brown/dead will give you the highest rate of viable seed. You can harvest when they’re more green, but the risk is a bit higher that they won’t be mature enough to grow.
2. Cutting the petals off is optional. I do it because we have very humid winters in the PNW, and extra plant material increases the chance of mold here.
3. I stored mine in big organza bags in our barn: it worked great!

For a growing perspective: zinnias love heat. These were planted very late actually (mid July) and they took off and grew really fast. Side note: They’re only planted in a tunnel because that’s where I had room this year, normally, I field plant zinnias!

They’re also cut-and-come again so you can easily keep cutting these until frost and they’ll keep making blooms. For harvesting, wait until the stem below the bloom is stiff. If it wiggles, it’s not mature enough yet!

It's that time of year when the chance is high that if you need me, you'll find me crawling down every single row in the field...and popping up constantly, like a dahlia-obsessed ground hog 🤪.

All our plants go in with a label when we plant, but once they bloom, every single one gets checked again against its label and bloom confirmed. This year I was able to start early (thanks to planting early) and I'm working through each row & also making sure that there are photos of each. Once a row is verified, the row gets tagged with flagging tape (this year I'm doing purple!), which gives a good visual for what's done and what's left.

Seedlings are planted separately from named varieties, and those are labeled with a number which includes seed parent and the year they were started. 💐

Bloom size is 5-5.5 inches. Dark stems which are some of the strongest I've ever seen. Loads of petals. Plant height is about 4 ft. And I'm swooning over the color. Raspberry underlay, and a dusty rose mauve.

This one is even getting tagged for the cutting bench this winter, which is something I NEVER do for 2nd year seedlings. I just want armloads of it next year!
