Have you experienced this type of bullet separation/breakdown with Re*****on Core Lokt bullets?
We just recovered these pieces from inside the body cavity of a bison that was shot twice with 405 grain 45’70 Core Lokt bullets through the ribs and lungs. We have usually had excellent results killing bison efficiently with Re*****on Core Lokt bullets on accurate broadside vitals shots. However, I don’t like how these bullets came apart. We have heard a few negative reviews from other folks, have you had a similar experience?

We just hosted three generations of hunters from a large well known Montana family. The kids and grandkids arranged this trophy bull hunt as a gift for their 78 year old grandad. One of the grandkids custom built a beautiful Henry 45’70 lever gun specially for this hunt. This amazing family owns and operates a successful legacy manufacturing business in Montana and still takes time to hunt together annually. Grandpa made two perfect heart shots with 405 grain bullets at 60 yards and a grandson made two additional heart shots at 100-120 yards to finally drop this massive bull. Four heart shots with a 45’70 shooting 405 grain bullets took 2 minutes to drop this massive bull. This is the tallest bull we have ever harvested, hanging from the tractor he measured slightly over 7 ft high from foot to shoulder, with a live weight close to 2,700 lbs. we estimate he will produce around 900 lbs. of 🦬🥩! The meat will require two x 15 cubic ft freezers that will be packed full. A truly giant bison. Grandpa is talking about doing a full body mount and creating a dramatic scene in his trophy room depicting the bison fending off an Alaskan grizzly and two wolves.

Another massive trophy bull harvested today, this time by our hunter who travelled all the way from Alabama. Micky made a perfect single heart shot at 80 yards with our customized 35 Whelen rifle shooting 250 grain core locts.
The only other cartridge that has as many “single shot” broadside kills on massive bull bison that weigh over 2,000 lbs. (in our records of almost 200 hunts) is a 375 H&H magnum. I’ll admit, the 35 Whelen may be my favorite cartridge for large game inside 150 yards.

Happy hunting couple from Georgia with their beautiful three year old bull. As restaurant owners and food industry experts they know a lot about quality 🥩. This age class bull provides about the perfect combination of quality, quantity, tenderness and flavor for pasture raised and finished bison. A single double lung shot just above the heart with 375 H&H Magnum shooting 300 grain bullets dropped this bull on the spot. For shooters who are not recoil shy, there is nothing more effective than a 375 H&H Magnum for ethical broadside shots on bison 1,500 lbs and bigger.

An amazing day outdoors with old friends. Ray just harvested one of our most impressive 🦬 bulls of 2025. They made the long journey to Montana from Georgia and braved some seriously cold conditions. Ray made a perfect single heart shot with his 375 H&H Magnum Rem 700 with 300 grain bullets. Last time we weighed this old bull was three years ago, back then he weighed almost 2,500 lbs…which will provide many hundreds of pounds of healthy ground 🦬🥩.

What is your favorite back up sidearm to carry while in the mountains? We live in bear country outside Yellowstone Park, and I have had multiple close encounters with grizzlies, black bears and a mountain lion on our property.
Having carried dozens of different handguns, I always go back to my original Smith & Wesson Model 629 4” Mountain Gun in 44 magnum.
Here are some of the reasons the Mountain Gun is my first choice.
Firstly, it’s deadly accurate and in decades of use has never jammed or misfired. Unlike my new Kimber 10mm 1911 which had all kinds of issues until the Kimber custom shop dialed it in.
A handgun must be reliable, comfortable and convenient to carry otherwise is will be left behind. With 4” lightweight barrel the Mountain Gun can be easily carried on the hip, pack belt or shoulder holster.
I had some custom wood grips made so it fits my hand perfectly and points instinctively.
While some may say the 44 mag is too light for bear, it’s the cartridge of my choice for the following reasons. When I’m traveling this is my truck/briefcase gun loaded with 44 special. For regular practice most shots will be 44 special which is an absolute joy to shoot. For summer at the ranch, I load it with 44 special snake shot, which is great for rattlesnakes, pests and birds. When guiding or in the backcountry I load it with 305 grain Hard Cast 44 Magnums. While I have never shot a bear with this gun I have killed a “not as dead as we thought” 1,000lbs. bison at 2 yards with two heart shots(both shots were pass through).
Finally, when hiking back in the dark after a long day in the wilderness, when you hear the brush break and sense a large animal moving through the forest nearby, simply putting your hand around the grip makes you smile.
What is your favorite back up side arm?

Is 375 H&H Magnum the perfect cartridge for big game weighing up to 1.5 tons?
We think so and carry a custom 375 H&H as a guide gun for Trophy Bull hunts. With 300 grain Hornady DGX bullets we have experienced exceptional performance on buffalo bulls ranging in size from one ton up to an estimated 1.5 tons in live weight.
On bulls this size in a dynamic herd situation, we believe the most ethical shot is a broadside vitals shot, preferably the heart. Our goal is “one shot and dead on the spot”. As soon as the first shot is fired, the other bulls will try to identify the wounded or dead bison. Once they smell blood the will begin to attack, gore, stomp and throw the injured or dead bison. This attack will damage the meat, hide, break bones and sometimes the skull. Therefore, getting the target bull down and retrieved as fast as possible in the fewest number of shots is key. We cannot load out a bison until it’s dead! On bulls this size even with perfect shot placement with a 375 H&H it may take two or three shots anchor him quickly. There are more powerful options such as the 415 Rigby, however most hunters in the USA don’t practice much with big bore rifles and we have observed shooters making bad shots in anticipation of the recoil, including a few badly scoped hunters requiring stitches. Where the 375 really shines is on the follow up shot(s) which may be anywhere from 50 out to 200 yards, often a quartering away, sometimes a quartering towards or frontal shot. The 375 is capable of reaching the vitals in all of these situations and gives us multiple options for quick follow ups. Bison are the largest land mammals in North America and deserve to be ethically hunted with the appropriate cartridges.

Hunting bison with handgun or archery tackle has its challenges.
Buffalo bulls like this Trophy Bull pictured, may weigh over 2,500 lbs. and are by far the largest and toughest land mammal in North America. This particular bull took three accurate broadside vitals shots with a 375 H&H Magnum shooting 300 grain Dangerous Game bullets at 120 yards, and still took two minutes to drop. While trying to get back up, two other massive bulls charged and started attacking him, it took us another ten minutes to drive the bulls away with a 4x4 truck before we could safely load him out of the area.
I have no doubt that modern large bore handguns and archery tackle would kill a bull like this, however the challenges include getting close enough for the first broadside vitals shot in the wide open often extremely windy conditions; then getting in position for follow up shots (multiple)with other equally massive bulls that will come to attack the hit bull after the first shot. Obviously the non target bulls attacking the injured bull are extremely valuable and cannot be shot. We use “selective harvest” as a means to manage our bison herd, this means we are targeting a “specific bull” out of a herd that may number in the hundreds. Broadside vitals shots are the only ethical shots to take on bulls this size. Another issue is hunter safety, in this litigious society our insurance broker would much rather we only shoot with “long range” cameras. Being caught in the windswept wide open, with no cover and nothing to hide behind by an aggressive bull or group of bulls will send a hunter to the happy hunting grounds hastily. We have had rifle hunters, ourselves and our hunting truck charged multiple times in situations like this. We are interested to learn the strategy adopted by other hunters who have successfully taken bison in a similar environment by handgun or archery tackle.

Another husband and wife team who drove all the way from California to harvest their 3 year old bison cow. The husband made a perfect broadside heart shot at 70 yards with our custom Re*****on 700 in .308 shooting 180 grain Norma Oryx bullets. Estimated live weight of this 🦬 was around 1,200 pounds, which should yield 400 lbs. of tender boneless cuts of meat, thick winter robe and European skull mount. They also kept all of the organs to be freeze dried as healthy snacks for their faithful hounds. Even after harvesting all of the organs the gut pile still weighed around 120 lbs, and was left on the prairie for our predator team to enjoy.
