We’ve been quiet on here, but farm and family life has been anything but this summer!
Here’s a recap since the end of June:
6/25 - Matilda, a jersey heifer, joined the herd. She should be ready to breed to our Jersey bull in January. 🐮
July - All the fair things. As always, the kids had an amazing time showing their animals and living their best lives despite the heat and wildfire smoke. Our boar, Spot, had a breeding date with a lady from a local farm (Pearl). Can’t wait to see the results in the next couple of weeks! 🐷🐷🐷🐷🐷
Early August - We took our first out of state family trip with the kids to Wisconsin for my brother’s wedding and tacked on some extra fun. 👰♀️🤵💒
8/13 - PB farrowed 12 piglets the day after we returned home. Thankful she held them in for us and not our farm watchers! Due to the heat of the summer, additional growing pain struggles, and the size of PB, this litter was her last. We ended up pan feeding her babies and she went to freezer camp on 8/29. Thankful to her for starting our pig breeding journey and now feeding our family 💛 We weaned 7 piglets.
8/22 - We picked up a new Berkshire breeder, EV. We’re super excited about her lines! She comes from a Shipley Swine Elite keeper sow who was bred to Shipley’s ‘Earn It’. She should be ready to breed for 2028 fair pigs 💚
8/24 - School started for all the girls, along with volleyball for Emery and Islie. 🏐
August-September -
- Several new goats joined the herd; Roxy - Boer show goat, Molly - Boer/kiko, and Raven - Nigerian Dwarf.
- Goat breeding is/was in full swing with both our large and small breeds! 🐐
- We also artificially inseminated 2 sows and 1 gilt with Shipley Swine genetics for prospective fair litters.
9/19 - Large goat pregnancy test results weren’t as we’d hoped, only 1 positive, so we’re planning round 2 breeding is in process with CIDRs and Lutalyse this time.
9/30 - Picked up baby chicks from the post office. Doing a late season batch of meat chickens.
