After three years of 'in-house' experimentation with growing hickories and oaks from seed we are collaborating with the Rutgers University New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. This is in addition to the Hazelnut orchard project which was established in Field #1 in 2019.
The purpose of the Hickory Nut Planting Experiment is to determine the most efficient method of growing these trees on a large scale. Oaks and hickories are notoriously difficult to transplant as they are to grow from seed in the forest. Hopefully, experiments such as this will guide us toward more successful methods of establishing hickories and oaks on a larger scale due to their advantages of survival in our changing environment.
