Our new additions to the herd! Dominic is a bull from Dottie and Leo. And Kristy is a sweet little heifer from Karen and Leo. The bull will be banded soon. It sure is fun to watch the baby calves jump around.

Population explosion in the goat barn. A few days ago, Pepper had her babies, a buck and a doe. We named them Bonifay and Chipley. (Boni and Chip). Yesterday, Charisma had her babies, Classy (a blue eyed doe) and Clarence (a buck). Then, today, Sunny had a buck and a doe. Still working on the names. That makes a total of nine this past month. Anyone looking for raw goat milk?

Worth the read. We do the same.

Worth the read. We do the same.

I am, without question, the worst part of my dairy cow’s life.

Twice a day I show up, steal her milk, and according to her dramatic mooing… starve her.
(If you ask her, she hasn’t eaten in years despite the hay in front of her face 🙄)

But let’s talk about something that actually is important — drying off a cow before she calves.

About 6–8 weeks before a cow has her baby, we stop milking her.
Not because we’re mean.
Not because she’s “done.”
And definitely not because she doesn’t want the grain anymore (she absolutely still wants the grain).

We dry her off because:
• Her body needs time to rest and repair
• She’s shifting nutrients to growing a healthy calf
• It helps prevent mastitis
• It sets her up for a stronger milk supply after calving

That “break” is the equivalent of maternity leave — except she doesn’t have to answer emails and her only job is eating, napping, and growing a baby.

So yes, for a few weeks I’m the villain.
The feed bucket is smaller.
The routine changes.
The side-eye is strong.

But a well-rested cow = a healthy mama, a healthy calf, and better milk in the long run.

Even if she still tells the fence post I’m starving her. 🐄😂

All 3 of the current kids are together in the "KID"nergarten, while their mom's get a break, get to browse on the pastures, and hang out with their herd mates. Such a nice day to enjoy the outdoors, safe from predators!
