We captured a beautiful moment out in the pasture this week — a mamma cow calmly birthing her calf in the sunshine and fresh spring grass. No barn, no stress, just the way nature intended it.

This is exactly why we like to calve in the spring. The mild weather means no frozen calves, healthier moms, and a much lower-stress environment for the whole herd. It’s a slower, more natural rhythm that allows the animals to thrive.

We’re just wrapping up calving season here on the farm, and it’s been a good one. The cows are content, the calves are strong, and all of the animals are out where they were meant to be — on pasture, grazing fresh grass and living naturally.

We wanted to share a quick look at what’s been happening out on pasture. In the video, you’ll see us moving the cows onto fresh grass—something we do regularly to keep them healthy and thriving. Rotating them this way gives the animals access to nutrient-rich forage, helps the land recover and regrow, and ultimately leads to better-quality beef. It’s a simple, time-tested system that works with nature instead of against it.

Moments like this are a good reminder that great beef starts long before it ever reaches your table—it starts with how the animals are raised every single day.

If you’ve been thinking about stocking your freezer, now’s the time. Our June beeves are almost completely spoken for, and fall slots are already filling up fast.

Reach out to reserve your whole or half beef today—we’d love to get you on the list.

We hear the phrase “mother hen” all the time, but how often do we actually get to see it lived out right in front of us? Maybe the closest for most of us is catching a glimpse of a robin’s nest outside the window.

There’s something grounding about it—watching life unfold the way it was designed to, at its own pace. I hope this video allows you to share in the joy we’ve been privileged to witness.

Sorting Steers & Stepping Into More

I spent some time cutting the steers out so we could move them up the road onto the new ground. It’s always a bit of a dance sorting them off, but there’s something satisfying about watching it come together and seeing them step onto fresh pasture.

The sky’s turning and the storm’s coming fast—and we still need to move the herd.
A real-life glimpse of a small cattle drive as we hustle to get the cows to fresh pasture before the rain hits.
This is farm life— It’s not polished or perfect out here—but always worth it.

Don’t let picture-perfect expectations keep you from something deeply rewarding. An imperfect garden can still produce an incredible amount of good food—and a whole lot of joy along the way.

Real gardening is messy, unpredictable, and far from perfect… and it always will be. Plants get eaten. Rows get crooked. Weeds show up overnight. Some things fail completely. That’s not a sign you’re doing it wrong—that is gardening.

And even in the middle of that imperfection, something amazing happens: you still grow real, nourishing food for your family. That's what matters.

This Calf Might Not Make It…

We had a bit of a scare on the farm this week.

Early this morning I found a newborn calf lying in the cold, unresponsive and nearly frozen. It didn’t look good, but I decided to try warming her up and see if she’d come around.

I brought her in and placed her in a warm bath, then spent the next couple of hours blow-drying her and rubbing her down with towels to slowly bring her body temperature back up.

Little by little she started to respond. Before long she was able to drink a bottle of milk, and once she had some strength back in her, we took her back out to reunite with her momma.

Thankfully the two of them bonded right back up, and she’s now doing well.

We’re grateful she pulled through and that she and her momma are now back together and doing well.

While days on the farm can be tough, they can also be incredibly rewarding-especially on days like this when there was very little hope, yet she still pulled through.

This time of the year is full of adventures for the Ruegemer family.

Aside from what is happening with our own animals, we frequently come across other unexpected and exciting things on the farm; such as happening upon a robin's nest as the eggs are hatching, seeing a mother fox and her new kits travel across the field, watching a red wing black bird attempt its first flight...etc.

This time we witnessed a snapping turtle coming from the pond after a heavy rain!
