Versailles area — our neighbors have a half beef available. We highly recommend it! We’re on our second round of beef from them. Please contact the Borchers directly if interested. Thanks!

We had a 1/2 beef come available that will go to processing this week at Winners in Osgood.

If you are interested in 1/2 or 1/4 please send a message to Woodland Acres or contact Christine, Nick, or Paul.

We’re in need of rain here. Unfortunately, it’s not looking too promising in the forecast. We increase our support of our local bird population, because we are basically an aviary here, during droughts. One important thing is to have clean and not hot water available for the birds. We maintain a bird bath in the shade and clean it with vinegar and water and power spray it out in between refilling. I try to change the water at least a couple times a day. We also maintain the blue-green fountain for hummingbirds to rinse off. They get sticky from eating nectar and sugar water and need running water to clean off.

Luckily, we leave a lot of areas on our property untouched which helps ensure food sources for the birds, but adding additional bird feeders can help during a drought since food sources diminish. A variety of seeds, dried insects, and even fruit can help. Make sure to rotate the fruit out. And please don’t feed birds jelly. This can cause harm to a number of birds including hummingbirds. (It can be fatal.)

Ya never know what you’ll find on our trails in our woods! 🐍 Almost stepped on this snake today. We’re thinking it looks the most like an Eastern Ribbon Snake even though we’re not truly in their normal range. Anyone know if that’s correct? Or is it something else?

Did you know snakes are beneficial? We’re lucky where we live that we don’t have poisonous snakes or they are very rare.

(Other places we’ve lived that has not been the case…always watching where we stepped. But we also had to look out for alligators and fire ants.)

Even so, we let snakes be because they help with rodent control. And by helping with the rodents, they also help reduce the tick population. Which we are all for!

And truth be told, snakes don’t really want to be around us any more than most of us want to be around them. Unless you corner a snake, try to pick it up, or step on it, they’re most likely going to slither away or freeze and let you pass as this one in the picture did.

June 3, 2023 is the Darke County Parks Native Plant Sale— our friends, Deeply Rooted Landscapes, will be there.

Fun facts about native plants—they are low maintenance, more drought resistant, and a food source for many local critters to include beneficial insects.

Mark your calendar now, you don’t want to miss this sale! We are welcoming back four native plant vendors who plan to bring a large variety of native plants, trees and shrubs.🌼 🐝🦋

Plant ID—We’ve seen an increase of Poison Hemlock on our farm. The symptoms of poisoning from this plant are pretty wicked and can be fatal. Unfortunately, this plant can look like some other common plants that aren’t poisonous such as a Queen Ann’s Lace.

If in doubt, always assume it’s poisonous. Please let your children know what it looks like as they could fall victim to it quicker thinking they are just picking some pretty flowers.

Please see the following article from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture— https://www.mda.state.mn.us/plants/pestmanagement/weedcontrol/targetplants/elimtargetplants/poisonhemlock

And always remember—leaves of three let it be. There are plenty of plants that have three leaves that won’t cause the problems of poison ivy and oak but once again, if in doubt, just assume it is.

Wear long socks and pants when in the woods to reduce exposure.
