Sam here! I’m hoping to find a registered Hackney pony to help me take my first steps into driving.

I’m looking for one that is well broke to drive, responsive, patient, and has a great temperament—a dependable pony that knows the ropes while I learn them!

Show readiness or show potential isn’t a priority. A good fit for a beginner is what matters most. I want to get involved in the sport, but I’m starting with baby steps.

The right pony will have a wonderful home at Callaway Hills Stables and the very best care. If you have one available or know of a good match, please message the page. I’d appreciate you sharing this and helping me find my learning partner! And he or she will most likely need a friend, so possibly two.

Share with anyone that may be able to help. Thanks in advance.

A little sneak peek at the stalls in our new training barn! 👀🐴 The first half has received two coats of stain, and we’re loving how everything is coming together. Which detail are you most excited to see when the barn is finished—the stalls, the tack room, or the training space? Drop your guess below! ⬇️

More progress and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks are coming soon, so be sure to follow along! 🏇✨

HELP US COMPLETE THE CALLAWAY HILLS ARCHIVE

We’re looking for photos of two horses—especially from these performances at Louisville:

🏆 Callaway’s Magic Dawn — 1986 World’s Champion, Three-Year-Old Five-Gaited Mare Stake, shown by Bill Field.

🌹 New Tune — 1986 Reserve World’s Champion, Amateur Five-Gaited Mare Stake, shown by Marcy Shatner.

Photos from those classes would be especially appreciated, but any confirmed photos of either horse, from any year, would help us preserve their place in the farm’s history.

Please message our page with photos or leads. If known, include the year, rider, and photographer so we can identify and credit them properly. Share this post or tag someone who might have a photo tucked away!

BUILDING A DYNASTY — 1985
The Legacy Grows

It’s been a while since our last chapter of Building a Dynasty. We’ve been tracking down photographs and checking the records to make sure we tell this history accurately before sharing it.

Every horse pictured is the actual horse named, although the archival photos may show a different year or rider from the 1985 results described.

In 1985, twenty-five registered foals by Will Shriver were born, while his older offspring continued making their mark at Louisville.

Callaway’s Cheltenham and Lady Luck BG earned World’s Championships. Callaway’s Blue Norther brought home two reserve titles, and Callaway’s Yahoodi added another.

Our reviewed records confirm at least nine direct offspring of Will Shriver earning thirteen Louisville placings that year—a chapter that shows the growing depth of Betty Weldon’s breeding program.

Join us as we return to 1985 and continue documenting the Callaway Hills story.

Turned a few weanlings out yesterday, and one little guy ran off the trailer, took a look around, then turned around and got right back in. 😂

Apparently, he needed a little more time to think about it!

Monday is off to a busy start at Callaway Hills Stables!

The footers were dug last week, and the lumber has arrived so we can start setting the exterior posts. Inside the stall barns, crews are finishing the tongue and groove, sanding wood, and beginning the staining process. The trusses for the training arena are scheduled to arrive this week, too!

Alongside construction, the daily work with the horses continues—weaning, helping youngsters acclimate, training, vaccinations, and mare checks.

Lots of moving parts, plenty of decisions still to make, and progress every day. We’ll share some sneak peeks throughout the week!

FREELANCE AGENT — FROM THE CALLAWAY HILLS ARCHIVES

In April 1983, a young American Saddlebred made his mark in English eventing—with royalty among the day’s competitors.

Five-year-old Freelance Agent, known as “Scooper,” competed at Hagley Hall’s Midland Bank Horse Trials, where Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips were also riding novice horses. Approximately 200 horses competed that day.

Owned by Jane Starkey and ridden by John Poole, Scooper earned the lowest overall score of the day, the De Lahaye Ch*****ne Trophy for the section winner with the best cross-country score, and honors as the best five- or six-year-old competing.

His pedigree brought together two of Betty Weldon’s foundation mare families. By Kate’s Scoop, a son of Kate Shriver, and out of Connie Gillen, by Johnny Gillen, Scooper also traced to Fourth Estate through his dam.

Jane had already ridden him to a division win in his first novice event near Birmingham. The week after Hagley Hall, he placed fifth at Downton Castle. She described him as intelligent, quick to learn, and mature for his age.

These photographs—including Jane beside Scooper at the horse trailer—capture another chapter in Callaway Hills history: its breeding reaching beyond the American show ring into the English countryside.

Do you remember Freelance Agent or Jane? Share your memories and photographs in the comments.
