I'm still plantin', yeah, yeah, yeah 🎵
I've been working on getting perennials in the ground such as more feverfew, baptisia, & lupine, all of which I started from seed earlier in the year. Getting these going now are an investment for the future and will add more to my early-sesson offering.
Recently planted my 3 zinnia succession & 20th round of sunflowers. You heard me, 20! If you plant sunflowers once, you only get one harvest. In order to have a steady supply of sunflowers for cutting, you have to continue planting them. This year I had very few gaps and those I did have were due to the deer taking out a few plots.
Also been taking advantage of the cooler temps to tackle weeds. It's so much more enjoyable when you're not drenched in sweat the moment you walk out the door.
The zinnias are hitting their stride, finially! I've been harvesting zinnias since June, but they took their time filling out. This time last year I had so many more zinnias, almost too many (is there such a thing?!). I scaled back this year & grew one main row with a few secondary spots. In hindsight, 2 full rows would be better. Those that are blooming are so good though & I have more on the way to finish out the season.
Dahlias are also taking their time, only getting a few stems here & there. Fingers crossed they pull their weight in September! I have a feeling they will!
