Home Gardener (HG) vs. Flower Farmer (FF)

🏡 (HG): This peony poppy is stunning! I need more of this and have the perfect spot to put them to bloom and enjoy in the landscape.

👩‍🌾 (FF): Shoot, this is too open for harvest now. The color is too dark for the season and had poor germination overall. I think this growing space should be utilzed by something else that is more reliable, a desired color, and better vase life.

Truth is- I'm both and have both conversations with myself. This will be going to seed so I can try again in the personal garden, but will be culled from the production field.

Good morning! Yesterday was a busy & beautiful day - first farmers market in Mt. Sterling for the season and this cottage opening in Beardstown. Owner Ross has the perfect vision for it alongside his florist location (amazing florist BTW). I'll be placing non-perishable items I make such as pressed art, simmer pots, & dried wreaths with items grown locally here in Illinois. If you are ever that way, check it out! From my field to your home ❤️

For those who attended the market, it was great seeing you again or meeting for the first time! I plan to be there every 1st Saturday of the month, but will sprinkle in some dates & keep you posted via FB. As always, reach out directly if you need anything in the meantime!

Happy Friday! Who's ready for fresh, summer tomatoes? Yeah, me too!! I'll be bringing 4 different tomato varieties with me tomorrow for you to grow in your own garden!

Cherokee Purple - slicer, rich, sweet, and smoky flavor.
Alice's Dream - slicer, full of antioxidants and low acid with citrus notes.
Orange Hat - small, patio variety. I'll have 4 all ready to go in containers. All you have to do is water them.
Pink Fang - a swap for standard romas, good sauce variety.

I will be offering bundle deals tomorrow on all seedlings/plants aside from the potted up containers. Folks can get a little or a lot at very reasonable prices.

Farmer's Market - 3 days to go!

Yesterday I highlighted a plant I'm familiar with and a darker tone. Today I'm shifting to two new plants I'm growing: white salvia & dusty miller. These can also be used in the landscape or containers or in a cutting garden. Great border plants or pop into gaps around the landscape to brighten things up! These are primarily in 4" pots, which makes transplanting quick and easy.

Both are annuals and prefer full sun. Stay tuned for more hightlighs leading up to Saturday!

Our Farmer's Market is 4 days away, who's ready?!

I plan on having fresh bouquets as well as annual plants and veggies ready for planting. Some of these are new, while others are returning because I enjoy them so much!

I'll try and post daily with some product highlights.

Today's Highlight, one of my faves:

Mahagony Splendor Hibiscus - grow for cut foliage or a great landscape addition. These can get 4' tall & add great fall color, plant now so they can get established for the fall show. Full sun, tough plant. I grew 2 in the cutting field and one on the southwest corner of my house last year and loved the dual use.

It feels like the cut flowers are changing daily, it's an exciting time! I have so many things to share it's almost overwhelming. In an effort to keep posts focused and brief, I'd like to hear from followers what you would like to see?

Friday Flowers! Inpsired by all the dancers taking stage this weekend - fun and vibrant! These petite wrapped bouquets are $15 each.

Want to jazz it up or make it more personal? A ribbon tied around it would be a great finishing touch!

Need to hold till a later performance? Just place in water and in a cool, dark area of the home. These will easily hold for several days and be enjoyed days after. I've had customers compliment how my flowers last for weeks, not days, weeks!

I know you have all heard of a pig in a blanket, but have you heard of a "hound in a hosta"?

Old Molly girl napping in the shade. I don't blame her, it's one of my favorite spots too! Prior to starting my cut flower field, I landscaped every square inch of our home for several years. This built my growing confidence, plant knowledge, and taught me about our growing conditions and so much more.
