Spring is here, the water is running, and grazing season is officially underway at 7B Farmstead.

This year we’re trying something new that we’re really excited about….Virtual fencing collars! Instead of relying only on physical fence, these collars allow us to control where cattle graze using GPS boundaries.

With support from the Montana Grazing Lands Coalition, we received a grant that helped offset the cost of implementing this system and demonstrating how it can work on small and leased properties like ours.

What this means for our operation:

• Better pasture management and more even grazing
• Ability to extend our grazing season and reduce hay use
• Making use of leased ground that has poor or limited fencing
• Protecting sensitive areas like waterways and riparian zones
• More flexibility across multiple properties

We run on a mix of owned and leased ground, and this gives us a practical way to manage all of it more efficiently while improving the land at the same time.

We’ll be tracking how this impacts pasture recovery, grazing efficiency, and overall herd management.

There will be a field day in June in partnership with Ravalli County Economic Development Authority, and we’ll share more details as they’re available.

We’re excited to share what we learn along the way. This feels like a big step forward for grazing in places like the Bitterroot where ground is fragmented and fencing isn’t always ideal.

Did You Know? We Raise Simmental Cattle at 7B Farmstead

Most folks know 7B Farmstead for our dairy, raw milk products, cheeses, and pasture-raised meats — but did you know we also raise Simmental and SimAngus cattle under 7B Simmentals?

Our Simmental program focuses on functional, maternal-driven genetics — cattle that are built to work in real-world conditions. We prioritize:

Calving ease

Strong maternal traits

Sound structure and longevity

Docility

Balanced performance (no extremes)

One of the reasons we love Simmental genetics is how well they cross on Angus cows. Simmental × Angus (SimAngus) calves benefit from heterosis, added growth and efficiency, excellent maternal strength, and strong carcass traits — a combination that works well for both commercial and registered herds.

Seeking Short-Term Grazing Leases – 7B Farmstead

We’re looking for a few short-term grazing leases for 4–10 head of cattle within 20 miles of Victor, MT, now through October.

We have gentle, well-handled Jersey milk cows (some with calves, some dry). We also may have few beef cows later (another 4-10) if the setup fits.
• Quiet, friendly animals
• Respect fences – no pushing
• Healthy and well-supplemented
• No Bulls!
• We take excellent care of every animal and pasture we use. No overgrazing!
