Hive inspections and pre-winter prep this weekend. We started marking our queens this year for ease of finding them with inspections. We still had a couple to mark and I think we got them all.
For those who know the yearly colors- yes I know this year is green- the queen we released in the video is last year’s queen. (Red) She’s been evasive all summer since we started marking.😃
We also can report a successful merging of two colonies that were on their way to “extinction”
Hive 1 struggled all summer to have a mated queen return( had lots of sign with queen cells and even saw a virgin at one point) This hive also had tons of stored resources. Hive 2 same thing, but finally had a mated queen return and start laying, but not enough workers to help collect resources. On inspection in mid August, there were sign of her laying, but couldn’t find her after two passes through the hive. We also suspected cannibalism happening as well. Disappointed, we closed up the hive and Matt planned to disassemble both hives later in the week.
One day before leaving to take our daughter to college, I was at work and Matt started working on cleaning and disassembling hive2. He found the queen! He decided to try the newspaper merge method we heard about from other beekeepers. I got home later that evening and as we were talking about it, I asked if he put slits in the paper. Of course he didn’t (because he didn’t hear that part of the conversation at our beekeeper meeting. 😂 it’s a good thing we both attend). The next morning before leaving on our 8hr trip to Wisconsin, he goes out and puts slits in the paper.
Today we got into this hive and as you can see in the last 3 pictures the queen (green dot) was accepted and is laying like a champ!! All these frames two weeks ago were completely empty or full of honey/pollen.
