Every year it’s been a tradition to go cut down our Christmas tree the first week of December. This year we got a living sapling and are planning on letting grow with us and a be a semi permanent tree for us for many years to come. Saving money and growing traditions. $120 to cut down a tree that will last 1 month, or $17 for tree that may be with us for several years.

I may have planted my carrots a little to close together but a 2 foot circle raised bed produced 9 pounds of carrots and made for easy harvesting by just flipping the bed up and knocking them out. So much easier than having to dig for them and guessing how deep they go.

Worm poo fact. Worm castings can hold 2-3x their weight in water. In the pictures you can see a seedling pot full of dry vermicompost and the same pot with wet vermicompost. Yes everything weighs more and swells when wet vs dry. But this can be a huge difference in your garden in terms of plant health and water savings. If you were to add 1% vermicompost to an acre of soil that acre would be able to hold an extra 25,000 gallons of water (estimated maybe more maybe less) but that’s an equivalent to almost an inch of rain. Now imagine how much less you’d have to water if you added a gallon of vermicompost to a 5 gallon planter (20%) 2 gallons of vermicompost in 4x8x1 bed would bring you a little over the 1% range (estimated) and could save you from having to water that bed and give those plants plenty of water to get through these summer heat waves.
