Our house plans cost us $1,486… but that wasn’t even the surprising part. 👀

We couldn’t find an existing plan with the layout we wanted, so we had them custom drawn. But when we called the building department, we learned that the “plans” needed for the permit could be as simple as a drawing on a piece of paper or even a magazine picture showing the general layout and square footage.

And as you’ll see throughout this build series… the house didn’t end up exactly like the plans anyway! 😂

Concrete slab instead of a crawl space, a front gable, and plenty of other changes along the way. 🏡

One month ago, Rusty was just figuring out his little cock-a-doodle-doo… 😂🐓

Fast forward one month and this boy has found his VOICE. 😂😂 He went from “was that a crow?” to “GOOD MORNING, EVERYBODY!” 🐓📢

Rusty has officially entered his rooster era. ❤️

Buying land is about SO much more than finding the perfect piece of property. 🏡

One thing we didn’t think enough about before buying was the county itself. Codes, permits, inspections, response times, and how easy (or difficult) the planning department is to work with can make a HUGE difference in the building process.

Thankfully, we got lucky with our county—but we’ve definitely learned that you should research the county just as much as you research the land.

If you’re planning to build, add this to your list of things to investigate BEFORE you buy! 👀

Another cost of building a home off the road. Our house sits about 845 feet back from the road, and the total cost to run the underground power came to $6,077.

When the chickens are food critics… 😂🐛🐔

I pulled a bunch of hornworms off my tomato plants and thought my chickens were going to have a feast. I put them all in a bowl… and they just stared at them like, “What exactly do you expect us to do with those?” 😂

So I started tossing them out individually, and suddenly they were VERY interested! 🤣

Apparently, the presentation matters. 🤷‍♀️🐔

Running water to the house sounds simple… until your house sits 700–800 feet from the road! 💧🏡

From the water meter to trenching and running the line all the way to the house, the total cost came to $5,120. And we’re not even done yet—eventually, we’ll also have a line T off to supply water to our garden! 🌱

Just another one of those expenses you don’t always think about when building a house from the ground up.
