The buttonbush is blooming and it is my favorite. 😍

As I sat next to a large patch of it, taking photos of swallowtails and Diana fritillaries, I noticed two lovely hummingbird moths working on it as well.

Easily missed as it mimics the bees around it, the snowberry clearwing is one of my favorite moths. Aptly named, their clear wings look like framed panes of glass from the right angle.

Join me for Friday Night Flowers this Friday night, June 5th, from 6:00-8:00!
🌼🌺🌸🦋🌼🌺🌸🦋🌼🌺🌸🦋🌼🌺

All right friends, we are going to do something a little different this week.

Summer camps and swim teams have me waving at these flowers out the window of the car as I come and go from the farm this week! I can’t get them harvested and I can’t get to market Saturday morning.

So I decided to host a pop-up u-pick flower event!

Here’s how it will work…..

Tickets will be $25. You must have a ticket to join.

This first Friday night event will be limited to 20 people.

You bring your vessels and vases.

We pick loads of flowers! 🌸🌺🌼

Maybe we even see a butterfly or two. 🦋😍

Y’all, I have the most incredible zinnias and snapdragons right now. If you sign up for Friday night and you do not LOVE these flowers, I will give you your money back.

If it rains you have two options. Either I refund your money or I make you a $25 bouquet to be picked up from the farm at your convenience anytime on Sunday.

Next step: Text me. 501-941-0331

Tell me your name, how many tickets you’d like, and how you want to pay (Venmo, cashApp, credit card) and I will send you directions for payment and the address to the farm (between Vilonia and El Paso, on Hwy 64).

I can’t wait to see you all!

Most of the time I would tell you that I don’t have a favorite butterfly.

I’m fortunate to be able to see absolutely incredible butterflies up close every single day.

And every time I think, “you are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

But my husband would point out that it’s the tiger swallowtails that make me wade into the chigger infested vegetation just to get close to them.

And he’s right. I absolutely adore the tigers, whether yellow or black. I think they are amazing.

I love to see their lazy float across the fields.

I love to see a butterfly almost as large as my hand against the green.

But mostly I love when the sun is opposite me and shines through their wings, lighting them up like stained glass.

8 days of Dianas! 😍

All are different encounters, no butterfly knowingly photographed twice with the exception of the butterfly with the severely deformed hindwing. I saw that butterfly two days in a row.

I often wonder if I’m seeing the same butterflies day in and day out but until this butterfly with the deformed wing, I’ve never photographed a butterfly with distinct damage over multiple days.

I had hoped to see this butterfly a third day but the weather changed and rain moved in. Prior to the rain, I was only seeing Dianas (including the deformed butterfly) nectar on self heal. After the skies cleared they moved on to mountain mint but there is no mountain mint in the area I’d been seeing this butterfly.

I’m curious to see if I run into it again.

I will never tire of finding “new to me” flowers on this farm.

In four years of documenting flowers and butterflies, apparently I have never visited this side of this field at this exact time of year because I have never seen these flowers.

My plant app couldn’t correctly ID them, insisting they were English lavender, so I turned to my favorite biologist, knowing she wouldn’t be stumped.

Her response, “That is Orbexilum simplex! It has a variety of common names -- single stem scurfpea is one of them. Yes! It is native! It has a very small range in Arkansas! I feel like it has a fairly short bloom period too.” 😍

Given what I saw this afternoon, she might have added, “And the bumblebees LOVE it!”

As do I.

This year’s sightings of the Arkansas state butterfly on our farm has begun for me!

I saw my first male Diana fritillary two days ago. Yesterday I saw five males!

All but one of yesterday’s butterflies was nectaring on self-heal. The fifth was working on spotted water hemlock.
