Another baby! This one arrived in a bit more dramatic fashion. Our heifer, Ruby, was 10 days past her due date. She never looked like calving was imminent and I was beginning to wonder if I had missed a heat cycle and my calculations were wrong. Not an hour after talking with my husband about it did I look into the pasture and see her in labor! Our calves are typically born in the middle of the night, and I was thrilled I'd get to watch and keep an eye on this first time mom. I kept watching her make slow progress, until she didn't. Eventually it was time to intervene. Baby was positioned properly but we opted to pull and help her out. It was hard work and emotionally exhausting as I feared baby was a goner by this point. Eventually we got him out and he was still alive! Ruby was a bit stunned at first but quickly started cleaning him off and let him nurse shortly after. She's a great mom so far!
This little guy is a bull calf candidate. We love his genetics so now we watch and wait to see if he can carry the herd in the future.
His official name is Red Sky Jasper, after the red gemstone.
Welcome to the farm, buddy!
