Mare Monday: Meet Grays Double Minnick!

Grays Double Minnick is a 2002 mare by Right This Minnick out of DDS Catalyst. She has proven to be a highly consistent producer, reliably passing on quality, structure, and trainability to her offspring.

She has three daughters out of Scotty’s Pistol. These mares were trained and shown by Shawn Holden in AQHA Ranch Versatility, and two of them remain in production on the ranch today. The third is currently being shown in Louisiana High School Rodeo cutting and reined cowhorse events by Colburn LeDoux.

Her dam, DDS Catalyst, is by Taris Catalyst out of Deborah D Doc 79, a phenomenal working ranch mare from a cutting horse line bred by Harold “Spook” Stream III.

On the top side, Right This Minnick, a son of Minnick’s Goldie, is recognized for producing versatile, athletic ranch horses that excel across multiple disciplines and are noted for longevity.

This combination of Minnick and Taris Catalyst influence is what makes Grays Double Minnick such a valuable broodmare.

Grays Double Minnick has also produced more recent offspring by Metallic Cajun and Spoonful of Sweets. She is shown here with her 2024 Metallic Cajun filly.

Mare Monday: Meet Spoonful of Rapper!

Here’s the last mare in our “Dry Doc Pride 1987” family of mares.

Spoonful of Rapper is a 2015 mare by Spoonful of Sweets and out of Rappers Pride.

Spoonful of Rapper brings to the table a pedigree stacked with everything a working ranch horse needs.
Her dam is a daughter of Smart Little Rapper, part of a line of Smart Little Lena progeny by Smart Little Jerry known for their cow sense, athleticism, and the larger bone needed for roping and ranch horses.

Her sire, Spoonful of Sweets, is a son of He’s A Peptospoonful, an NCHA money earner of more than $72,000 and finalist in the NCHA Open Futurity, out of Remedy For Sweets, a mare with more than $191,000 in NCHA earnings herself.

This cross gave Spoonful of Rapper a beautiful blend of conformation, bone, mental toughness, willingness to work, and a gorgeous buckskin coloration. While she wasn’t ridden as extensively as her dam, she was still put under enough pressure to ensure she possessed the mindset and athletic ability our horse program takes pride in producing. Under that pressure, she consistently rose to the top of her year’s group of horses before ultimately being chosen to join the broodmare band.

She is pictured here with her 2025 Metallic Cajun filly.

Mare Monday: Meet Little Pride 2010 ✨

This week’s mare spotlight is on Little Pride 2010, a 2010 palomino mare by Little Til Light and out of Dry Doc Pride 1987. She is also a half sister to the dam of last week’s featured mare.

Her dam, Dry Doc Pride 1987, was bred to Little Til Light as part of an effort to bring the Grays Starlight lineage back into a program known for producing excellent ranch horses with great attitudes and durability. The result was Little Pride 2010.

Before joining the broodmare band, she spent time working on the ranch to ensure she possessed the attitude and athleticism we require of our horses. Today, she continues to further our goal of breeding horses with strong conformation, solid bone, and the kind of mindset needed to work all day in difficult terrain and still get the job done.

Little Pride 2010 is pictured here with her 2026 c**t by Spoonful of Sweets.

This week we gathered fall pairs out of some winter pasture. Once gathered, we started the herd, strung them out, and trailed them several miles back to Headquarters. We let them settle for the afternoon and we started back on them first thing the next morning. Calves were sorted off the cows for spring vaccinations and deworming. The cows went through their health protocol as well. The larger end of the calves were weaned off the cow to go on to the next stage of production, backgrounding. The light calves were processed and kept separate to go back with the cows.

Spring workings are a big part of keeping cattle healthy and productive. Once the herd was worked, small calves were turned back out with cows and parted from the herd to go on to fresh grass. There is nothing like seeing healthy cows and their calves drift out across our Southwest Louisiana prairies, utilizing that God given resource to transform it into beef.

This past week, we were honored to host Mr. Kent Rollins and his production crew as they filmed an episode of Cast Iron Cowboy featuring Gray Ranch.

On Wednesday, he cooked a Gray Ranch chuck roast that truly embodied the rich beef flavor we work hard to produce. His wife, Shannon, prepared biscuits and peach cobbler that were nothing short of exceptional. True comfort food that perfectly rounded out the meal.

It was a great experience for our crew, and we’re grateful to have been chosen to be part of it. Be on the lookout for us on the Outdoor Channel in 2027!

Mare Monday: Meet Rappers Pride! ✨

Rappers Pride is a 2002 mare by Smart Little Rapper out of Grays Pride.

She was chosen to stay on the ranch with the intent of eventually joining the broodmare band, largely because, in the words of former ranch manager Kent LeDoux, “We always keep fillies out of the special mares, and her dam was surely one of those great ones.” One of our stallions, FR Playguns Pride, is also out of Grays Pride, making him a half sibling.

He emphasized that the fillies were required to prove themselves, so Rappers Pride proved herself as a solid working ranch mare before ever being bred. Since then, she has gone on to produce multiple horses that have been retained on the ranch, both as broodmares and as part of the stock horse remuda.

She is pictured with her 2026 Metallic Cajun foal and is being bred back to Metallic Cajun for 2027.
