Why Most Bison Producers Skip the Texas Gate
Texas gates (cattle guards) are a rangeland staple — but ask around at any bison operation, and you'll find most producers steer clear of them. Here's why.
🦬 Hoof size is the problem. Bison hooves are significantly larger than cattle hooves. On a standard-spaced guard, that extra surface area lets them bridge across the gaps and create a stable platform to balance on — turning a "barrier" into a crossing point.
🦬 They're not deterred the same way cattle are. Standard guards work on an animal's instinctive fear of falling and leg injury. Bison are powerful, confident, and far less hesitant to test a questionable surface than cattle tend to be.
🦬 The risk isn't worth it. A failed crossing attempt can mean a leg injury to a 1,500+ lb animal — a costly and painful outcome for you and the animal.
If you're set on using one anyway, here's what it takes:
✅ Wider spacing won't help — you need narrower, more closely spaced rails sized specifically for bison hoof dimensions, not standard cattle specs
✅ Increased pit depth and width, purpose-built for bison, not retrofitted cattle equipment
✅ Frequent inspection — bison weight and force accelerate wear on rails and structure
✅ Backup containment (electric wire, secondary gate) as a fail-safe, since no guard is 100% bison-proof
For most operations, a well-placed gate — manual or bump — remains the safer, more reliable choice for bison containment.
