When studying ear tags from pasture photos, one has to recognize the truth of this. Each tag has 3 numbers, the sire on top, then the dam, then the cow's own number. But one or more maternal generations deeper into the cow is always an unseen adventure.
On 864, way back there behind 313, 9511 was bred to the Rito 149 son, Matson of Volga, to make Billy of Volga's dam. 9511 was bred to Churchill of Wye to make 740. John put Billy on 740's's daughter by Manning of Wye to make 864's dam, then put a 740 son on her to make 864.
I'm sure there is more, but that's enough planning backwardly ahead.
