Sadly, our beautiful boy, Red, joined our heavenly flock in the stars yesterday. At nine years old, his body finally failed him, and we said goodbye to the best rooster one could ask for. To the hens, he was a gentleman like no other, always putting them before himself. I loved hearing him clucking to them to eat a treat I was giving them or one he found on his own, like a big beetle. He always shared with them first before having any himself. He was always gentle and you could tell how the hens loved him, especially Buffy. At ten years old, she knew him his whole life! The past couple years, he and Buffy stopped roosting at night and he would sit atop her! She and Stella will miss him greatly. Stella adored Red! Many times over the years, I'd find her grooming him as best as she could with her scissor beak and he would patiently wait until she was done. Maybe she adored him because he actually saved her life once by sounding his alarm call when a hawk attacked her? Had it not been for him, I would have never known she was being attacked and she may not have lived past that day. Red was a lover, not a fighter. He had been in a few fights with other roosters and never won, always requiring a lot of nurturing him back to health. We always chose to keep Red and to rehome the other rooster as he was just the best with the hens as well as with visitors. Visitors loved seeing Red and how impressive he was. Some visitors who had been attacked by roosters in the past learned that not all roosters are mean, as they watched him calmly stand watch over his flock. Along with his body, his crow has weakened over the last couple months, but I did catch him crowing just a couple days ago, maybe for the last time. Our farm is much quieter now and there's a huge missing hole where his majestic presence once was. Rest in peace, sweet boy. ๐Ÿ’”

Today was Dora's 14th birthday and Thursday was Jazzy's 16th birthday! These two girls have been nothing but a pleasure since they came to live at our farm just over three years ago. They enjoyed this beautiful July day by grazing with their herd, relaxing in front of fans, and enjoying a little extra in their dinner bowls. Jazzy also had fun hanging out with visitors, while Dora did her own thing, as she likes to do. Happy birthday, girls!

What a gorgeous July day! It was our pleasure to welcome so many visitors to our farm today to share with them our love of alpacas. We had the most vast age range of visitors from toddlers, all the way up to our oldest visitor ever, a 103 year old woman! Amazing! It was also nice to see quite a few familiar faces, too! Thank you to all that came out today!
It looks like the next few open days will be beautiful, too! Book a farm tour to see the alpacas at lavender-hill-farm.square.site. Book a tour for 10:00, 10:30, 11:00 or 11:30 to see them out in the field, like in this photo.
