My wife and I decided to try to have a child and we wanted to prepare our bodies, especially my wife’s body, for bringing a new life into this world. We wanted to feed our bodies the proper nutrition. We wanted to eat fresh, real, whole food, rich in nutrients, food which was not genetically modified and was clean. Our definition of clean was organic, without pesticides and fertilized with traditi
onal clean fertilization methods. We simply wanted our bodies to be as healthy and clean as possible. To help us understand and develop that vision we started to get educated. We joined blogs, liked pages, downloaded podcasts, watched videos, read books, watched documentaries, hired a nutritionist, consulted with dieticians and medical doctors. We even took small nutrition courses to better understand the interactions of nutrients and how they are absorbed by the body. In this initial education we discovered we were on the correct path for our baby for sure, but we also found it was a really good idea for us to be on this sort of nutritional plan for us too, and for life. From this initial education and with our new life eating plan, we wanted to find these foods in the marketplace. As we took our vision to the store we found we were very limited by the options. Lots of products talked about health and nutrition, but when we dug just a little deeper we found there wasn’t really much there for a family trying to eat well and healthy. The differences we found between the front of the packages (the marketing side) and the back of the packages where the actual nutritional values and manufacturing standards are written --was startling. We found great organic juice products for instance, but they were heated for packaging. In that process a lot of the nutrients and micronutrients we wanted and needed for our health was killed, and not actually in the juice. We found cold pressed juice, but it wasn’t organic, and therefore would introduce a lot of toxins and pesticides we didn’t want for our family. We found FairTrade that wasn’t organic, organic that wasn’t fair trade, fresh and cold pressed that wasn’t organic, and organic that wasn’t raw and unprocessed, and combinations of all of these that also used GMOs. There were very few options for us in the retail environment to get the nutrition we wanted and the convenience we needed for our lifestyle. That’s when we decided to do it ourselves...
That journey led us to sourcing all our own organics from all over the world. Turning that stuff into meals was another journey, and is also another story. They are a great way to get the nutrition you need, while using the foods you love. We found it difficult to just sit down and eat 2 bananas, an orange, raw ginger, raw cacao nibs, raw vanilla beans, and a hand full of china seeds, walnuts, cherries, and strawberries in one sitting. We just wouldn’t sit down to a meal like that. However, if we didn’t eat several fruits and vegetables all at once, we found we wouldn’t always remember or find the time to consume my minimum 5 a day suggested allowance of fresh fruit. We were even less likely to eat the recommended amount of vegetables, even being vegetarians. However, when we blend up those bananas, strawberries, oranges, cherries, walnuts, and so on, we get a delicious smoothie we can easily drink in one sitting. Smoothies allowed us to consume the whole, raw foods we wanted, but in a package we could easily consume, or take on-the-go when needed. To spread the word we decided to create this page, and share our experiences. We hope you enjoy it.
