It's that time of the year again, we have begun cattle weaning at the farm. Weaning a calf from its mother is the most stressful time in a calf’s life. The goal is to wean with the least amount of stress to keep the calves healthy and growing without any setbacks. All farms have their own way of weaning. I like fence-line weaning for the first month, I feel it's a healthier way to cut the cord and it works well here. They still have visual contact with their mothers, so the only change they undergo is no longer being able to nurse. Minimizing change and stress for calves is so important to post-weaning health.
