Recipe for a Garden Food Share
Basic Flow and Process of a Garden FoodSHARE -Set a date and time that fits most people’s lifestyles in your immediate community/ neighborhood and is 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish. The Meet - The total area you are attracting might be the residents of several places next to each other - like Honomu, Hakalau and Ninole which is a great FoodSHARE. What Makes
a Good Meeting Spot. Public land, OR private land as long as there is no conflict with other groups or events that have set appointments for use.
-In Wailea/Hakalau we meet on Tuesday at Hakalau Veterans Park. It offers lots of parking and wide shoulder to set up a double line of tables in a beautiful outdoor setting. Since inception, 6 years ago, it has not conflicted with any other group or person using the park or the parking. It can also be on private land and if it rains, then it rains on umbrellas. Keeping a FoodSHARE Free and Easy-After FoodSHARE is over everyone cleans up there own space and hauls out their own rubbish. We choose not to burden the County or State in any way. No one pays for a booth or stall – it is free to come sell, trade, buy, and PRICES ARE LOWER. If you have a tree and fruit falls on the ground bring it to FoodSHARE, if you need help picking it you can meet someone at FoodSHARE that can help and you can make a good trade for something you like. Needed – One or two or three people that keep the announcements going each week. This can be done through email or posters at the post office or other places with boards in you community. Now you can post on facebook on our wall at Big Island Garden Food Share. ANY ONE CAN POST! - Please keep all posts in the realm of gardening, farming, veggies, fruit, plants, trees, food, and ideas to help promote Garden Food Share on your road, or in your community. Private Community Gardens - The immediate concept is each member would have their own areas in the garden and some shared areas in the garden and greenhouse to grow enough for their own needs and the needs of others. Initially the needs of others are the purchases and trades made at FoodSHARE by participates who come one day per week for 60 to 90 minutes. Your efforts allow you a weekly share of the organic produce sold and traded at FoodSHARE. For the past 5 years that has included lettuce, 3 to 5 types of micro greens, and what ever has been seasonal and includes choys, snow peas, green beans, kale, chard, cilantro, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, taro, and poha berry. Each an over flow of produce is easy to achieve and that can be sold, traded or gifted and each member will be entitled to a share. Sales from FoodSHARE are used to buy seeds, soil amendments, IMO's, irrigation, and other resources that need to be paid for. Your land or farm could benefit - and for sure your community will prosper, and people will flower with delight.
