One year ago, as the devastation and loss of life was being realized, I recall feeling a sense of helplessness and lack of purpose. There were so many that needed help and I was having a hard time finding my role while the triage was happening.
Looking back, I see now that I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing. My ohana was finishing up this newly restored lo'i which was planted shortly after these photos were taken. This week, we began harvesting the kalo and the first of it went with me to school to feed the keiki. Many of whom were affected directly by the fires. And all of us who continue to be affected by those traumatic days and weeks while our community burned.
A year later, Maui is still in need of nourishment, support, and care.
As we head into ceremony tomorrow at sunrise, I pray that we have the strength to continue to nourish and care for each other, so we may continue to heal. That we continue to take on and carry out kuleana that uplifts our community. And that we afford each other the grace to take care of ourselves.
