The importance of reading.

Went down an Internet rabbit hole that led me to the DairyNZ website’s page about milking clusters.

They recommend that to milk any 3 teater cow to use the opposite cup, as opposed to the one under that good teat. They also recommend crossing the cups if you have 2 adjacent teats that point inward.

Wow! What an improvement that is! The liners don’t skip or squawk- both indicators that there’s not a good suction Connection and can damage the teat.

This is very basic technology. The claw is attached to a vacuum hose and each cup/inflation is placed on a teat and the milk begins to flow. There is a pulsator that regulates the flow, so it draws and releases rhythmically, like being suckled. The milk is pulled into a bucket which we then carry up to the bulk tank for cooking and storage.

The miracle of fruit. The peach tree was practically defoliated from peach leaf blister again, and we had a hard frost after the blossoms set.

But here we are! Ricotta smash toast immediately, and baking peach cobbler later.

Dorrie is a rockstar. She falls at the lower end of the pecking order, is also smaller stature than 90% of the herd. But she’s one of the easiest calvers we have and is an excellent mother.

She decided to go into labor 10 days early overnight, so we woke up to this adorable heifer we’ve named Sprite.

Sprite is about 6 hours old and bouncing and leaping and shimmying all around. She’s also eating merrily!

The good news- Astrid is pregnant.
The bad news is- neither Lottie or Lana are, and we think Lana was.

Dairymaid duty, drawing a blood sample from the tail, and running the 20 minute test. Why were we checking? Sometimes it’s because we will see mounting behavior, but in this case it was our SmaXtec monitoring system that gave an oestrous alert.

8 years ago we had an unexpected visitor. Dotty Spicer was the daughter of one of the previous owners and lived here from 1952-1956, and 1964-65. She, her niece and nephew, who bright photo albums and told us about her uncle building the stairs to the second floor, and revealed the location of the blueberries, we had not yet discovered.

I love living in a place filled with stories.
