Yesterday morning, Farmer Karl was able to attend his daughter’s 5th grade class and talk with them about his passion- crops, soil, & soil conservation. He even went outside and demonstrated how to obtain a soil sample and what each layer tells you about the soil. Also discussed the science and math he uses daily. Education is a life long journey 😊

This year has been a constant battle against incoming weather. Yesterday, everyone was in the field trying to get the peppers in the ground. As support staff, Luke’s little girl Ellie was cheering them on from her porch! Come out today to the farm and pick some berries before the weather rolls in. Pre picks available also!!

The Honey Bees were out working the Crimson Clover yesterday. Today they will probably stay close to their hive. We will be open here at the Berry Patch though!!! Open 10-5 and we will have plenty of pre picks available!

Are we having a Berry Good morning?
Maryland Farmers planted approximately 433,000 acres of cover crops in the fall of 2021. They are planted after summer crops are harvested. Cover crops are typically rye, barley, and other cereal grains. They control soil erosion and runoff, keeping the top soil and nutrients on the farm and out of the creeks, streams, rivers and Chesapeake Bay. The cover crops form a green manure and release their captured nutrients back into the soil to improve the health of generations of crops to follow. It’s not about today; its about tomorrow and and all of the tomorrows to come when you are a steward of the land. Farmer Russ was driving the tractor with 7 year old grandson Rudy in the jumpseat. They looked to be deep in conversation. I knew that I was watching the circle of life play out on multiple levels.
Last night was Berry long; but was it worth it?
Luke is scorching the inside walls and corners of my bee hive pieces. This is a safe way of killing off hive beetles and any germs left from them stacked up waiting to be used. Next I will put another coat of paint on the outside and let them sit out in the sunshine and weather for a week or so before using again. Spring chores!!!!
The weather has been good and soybean harvest continues.

Mrs. Kimm's kindergarten classes headed down the road to Shlagel Farms to visit the pumpkin patch. They had so much! They loved the hayride to the pumpkin patch. Everyone got to bring home a pumpkin. They also played on the playground, the sandbox, the corn box, walked around the straw maze, and petting the animals.

Shlagel Farms is celebrating its 110th year of continuous farming this year. Russell Shlagel is the third generation of Shlagels to farm this same land. His grandfather; Otto came to America because of advertisements by the German American Colonization Company for good farmland, and he bought the original tract in North Waldorf in 1912. Sadly, he died within a few years while clearing land in the pasture. His wife also passed within 6 weeks and left 5 minor children on the farm. Of those, George; who was 12 at the time, was determined to stay on the farm and make it profitable. Except for a stint in the US Army George spent his entire life on the farm and loved the land until his last breath. He passed his love of the land on to his son Russell who farms full time along with sons.

I got creative making lunch this week with this delicious salad: Tomatoes, peaches and corn I got from Shlagel Farms at the Greenbelt Farmer's Market topped with a little feta, some lemon basil, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. So delicious I could eat this everyday!
