It seems people like watching the days things go wrong here at the farm. That was definitely the case for our #2 video this year. Way back in the early spring, a small fire got blown around and caught the dead leaves in the wood on fire and quickly got out of hand. No real damage was done thanks to it being in an isolated area and the quick response of our local volunteer fire departments.

Everybody loves it when harvest starts! #3 on our countdown is the first day of harvest 24. Not corn or beans, but wheat harvest! Wheat harvest came very early this year, and we were blessed with an outstanding wheat crop.

At #4 on my most view videos list was the video burying the irrigation pipe from our new well to the riser for our 360 Rain. A catchy title helped this one along, but it was an important day in getting everything up and running for what turned out to be a dry finish to the year.

Starting off our top 5 most viewed videos of 2024 is one from a day every farmer hopes never happens. Back in August, I had a car hit my sprayer while making a left turn. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the situation wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Sweetcorn freezing day today! Picked about 14 dozen ears, husked, washed, cut, blanched, cooled, and bagged. Ended up with about 33 pint bags of corn to enjoy throughout the year.

One of those things you hope never happens happened today. While making a left hand turn into a field entrance with the sprayer, a car tried to pass me on the left and ran into the left rear tire on the sprayer. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

This was unfortunate circumstances where the driver thought I was slowing down to allow them to pass instead of turn into the field driveway. Sure, the driver shouldn't have passed in this instance, but I understand what they were thinking and could have taken more of the road to not allow them to attempt to pass as well.

It could have ended much worse. The sprayer could have gone over the car, potentially rolling the loaded sprayer. They could have hit my front tire, making the damage much more severe, and the speed could have been higher. Who knows what could have happened.

The damage to the car was significant, the damage to the sprayer was a scuffed tire. You don't want to be the car in a car vs farm equipment accident.

To the vehicle drivers, be cautious around farm equipment. Remember, we turn into field driveways, not always at road intersections. We don't want to be on the road with the equipment but have to move between fields. I'll always attempt to give plenty of room to pass when it's safe to do so. I don't want you following me any more than you want to follow me.

To the other farmers, take an extra second to look twice. I failed to check the camera to see if anyone was following me in this instance. Make sure your lights work and do your best to be courteous to the cars on the road. We don't need a bad public image because we can't share the road.

This is, in my opinion, the most advanced technology available in agriculture today! 360 Yield Center is a fully autonomous machine designed to place water and nutrients directly on the base of the corn rows. It's a much more efficient way to irrigate crops and much less work than the hard hose traveler we had been using.
