On about 5 acres of sandy loam soil, farming partners Rebecca Moore and Carla Jo Larmore have been growing a full range of vegetables, herbs, garlic, berries, and cut flowers since 1999. While not certified organic, Blue Moon is dedicated to ecological farming practices and uses no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Our farm is a homestead farm and we are aiming at food security for o
urselves as well as enough extra to sell as a cash crop to sustain our families. We are lucky to have a long-standing, committed crew, who work with us to grow healthy and nutritious food for our community. Blue Moon products are distributed solely in the San Juan Islands, and can be found at the the San Juan Island Food Co-op, and at several local restaurants. Our quality standards are high and we are proud of the excellent produce we provide. The sustainability of our farm is directly linked to the health and resilience of our county-wide community, so we are particularly interested in efforts that are looking ahead to the challenges of peak oil and climate change. Some areas of focus on the farm include: reduced tillage, cover cropping for soil health and fertility, compost teas, worm compost, and crop rotations. We keep some small livestock for our own use and grow the market garden as our livelihood. We incorporate elements of biodynamic agriculture and permaculture principles into our approach to market farming. While we use a tractor for tillage and cultivation, much of the work in our 4-ish acre garden is done by hand.
