Blue Moon Produce

Blue Moon Produce Blue Moon Produce is located on the northeast side of Waldron Island at Point Hammond Farm.

On about 5 acres of sandy loam soil, farming partners Rebecca Moore and Carla Jo Larmore have been growing a full range of vegetables, herbs, garlic, berries, and cut flowers since 1999. While not certified organic, Blue Moon is dedicated to ecological farming practices and uses no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Our farm is a homestead farm and we are aiming at food security for o

urselves as well as enough extra to sell as a cash crop to sustain our families. We are lucky to have a long-standing, committed crew, who work with us to grow healthy and nutritious food for our community. Blue Moon products are distributed solely in the San Juan Islands, and can be found at the the San Juan Island Food Co-op, and at several local restaurants. Our quality standards are high and we are proud of the excellent produce we provide. The sustainability of our farm is directly linked to the health and resilience of our county-wide community, so we are particularly interested in efforts that are looking ahead to the challenges of peak oil and climate change. Some areas of focus on the farm include: reduced tillage, cover cropping for soil health and fertility, compost teas, worm compost, and crop rotations. We keep some small livestock for our own use and grow the market garden as our livelihood. We incorporate elements of biodynamic agriculture and permaculture principles into our approach to market farming. While we use a tractor for tillage and cultivation, much of the work in our 4-ish acre garden is done by hand.

Greetings Blue Moon followers! It's been a while since we've posted anything here, but we have hit full blueberry harvest swing and want to spread the word to our local folks that we have flats available now and for the next few weeks. They are so delicious and super easy to freeze for future enjoyment.

Call or text Rebecca at 360-317-8130 if you'd like to arrange for delivery on Orcas, San Juan, or Lopez.

Oh, wow... this puts my west side winter woes in perspective. Such a strong weather system! I know my chickens aren't very happy.

"And they were incredulous and asked me, “Is it really possible that in the United States, farmers will plant a seed and they will not pray, they will not dance, they will not make libations or any type of offerings to the land and expect that seed to grow and nourish their community?” They just couldn’t believe that. It’s unheard of in African—in any indigenous cosmology—to treat the land or the seed as a material thing only, as a pack of genes that’s just going to perform with certain inputs." -Leah Penniman

I'm humbled and inspired by this interview with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman of Soul Fire Farm

Farmers and food activists Karen Washington and Leah Penniman talk about reconnecting to the land and building community through farming.

And some not good news... If you eat food, this concerns you!

As four seed companies now control more than 60 percent of the global market, a seed policy expert argues that consolidation poses major risks to our food supply.

Here's a little good news! Too bad the United States is one of a handful of countries not backing this declaration.

Here's a little good news! Too bad the United States is one of a handful of countries not backing this declaration.

Conventional modern agriculture threatens seed diversity around the world — but a new UN declaration seeks to reverse that.

Blue Moon Produce will be at the San Juan Island Farmers' Market tomorrow 11/17. We're excited to bring lots of fall bounty to enliven your cooking and eating this holiday season. In addition to lots of apples, shallots and assorted winter squash, we'll also have bulk carrots, cabbage, celeriac, enormous daikon radishes, kale, chard, red peppers, red and fingerling potatoes, herbs, and a limited supply of salad mix. We are also bringing some of Nootka Rose Farm's amazing celery, napa cabbage, and sweet meat squash.
Blue Moon T-shirts and tote bags will also be available.

Join your neighbors at the Brickworks tomorrow from 9:30-1 to stock up on produce and other fine food and crafts. The weather looks good, so Blue Moon will be set up outside on the plaza, though most vendors will be inside. Hope to see many of you there!
