Joel Salatin is one of my heros. Put on earth for the greater good of all humans.

Joel is a very intelligent person with great values, farms the right way, knows his way around politics and business, and tells it like it is. The bottom line is to buy your food locally from people you trust. Get the real deal and keep government and mass food production out of your gut and wallet.
(This is a 'longish' video, but certainly worth the watch. Take your time and watch more of his. Speaks the well-spoken truth about food. His farm, Polyface, is the real deal and an example of how to do it the right way.)

Farming is not for the faint of heart.

Pictured is over 800 cucumber plants-in a very valuable space-one of our hoop houses. We have spent a lot of time and money seeding, planting, watering, pruning, trellising, and taking care of these plants to the best of our ability.

Harvest started last week and everything looked great. Had a deal with FCPS for 850 lbs/week that was supposed to start next week. Then disease hit. Bacterial wilt. The biggest bummer with no cure. We had preventative measures to keep cucumber beetles excluded (whom are the carrier and vector that spread the bacteria), but there were a just a few who sneaked in and ruined this entire crop. Huge loss for us emotionally and financially.

One of the many reasons we diversify, and while this crop failure will not wipe out Pleasant Hill as a whole, it is heartbreaking. Farming ain't easy, and we will use this as a learning experience.

We usually post about all the abundance, beauty, and great things we have going on, but wanted to shine a little light on the not-so-glamorous happenings.

You can get SO MUCH MORE REAL FOOD from us in addition to all the fruits and veg!

We also have the best local meats, dairy, baked goods, ferments, pasta, pickled/canned goods, shrooms, hummus, herbs, flowers, and so much more! Most of which are grown or produced right here in Frederick County!

It's a triple win shopping with PHP. Your food dollars go far. You get high-quality, fresh, SAFE food while supporting us and other local businesses. The money you spend with us helps out our community as a whole.

I wish the Mom and Pop hardware store in Walkersville didnt close. That was my go to for a long time. Walk into their store, be greeted by name, they ask about how things are going, and then ask what they can help you find in the store. A store where they truely care about you, are knowledgable about what they are selling, have recommendations, and actually care you are there.

It is a becoming a lost art and PHP will keep alive the experience of actually enjoying shopping, in person, and talking with real people who truly care.

Please make the time and effort to think about the value given and earned when shopping with local businesses. Slow down and make it a conscience decision about what matters. Change is hard at first, then becomes routine.

The value is there and you can find it with us. We care deeply about all of our customers and community. Quality, values, and customer service are we stand for and what you should expect from us. Fresh produce is a difficult business when it comes to quality control. We will ALWAYS make it right if you are ever not 100% happy with anything.

Pic is of home-made steak and cheese subs made with local ingredients. Easy to make and enjoyed by my whole family of 5. Took less than 20 minutes and minimal prep and clean up work. The one pack of chipsteak made 6 subs for our family. Everything local except the hoagie rolls and mayonaise (gotta work on getting those locally or making ourselves.)

Ya'll...Jason Stum with Healthy Homestead Personal Chef is the real deal!
I should have made this post a while ago as he has been supporting our farm (and many other local farms) since he started this venture. He uses only the highest quality ingredients, has strict food-safety protocalls, and spends his food costs $ locally. I have had the pleasure of enjoying lots of his culinary creations, and I assure you, you will be very happy with a truly local and healthy meal that is extremely affordable and CONVENIENT!

School is starting and you do not to sacrifice a healthy, 'home cooked', local meal due to a busier schedule. Because it also gets DELIVERED TO YOU! Please give them a try and see what is possible for your busy schedule, health, and happiness by being aware of this gem right in Frederick!

..I have came across so many fellow business owners since starting my own over 13 years ago. Jason has always really stood out to me as one of the tops. He has a true love of his craft, is extremely experienced and talented (yet humble) and really puts his beliefs in the forefront of a great mission and stays true to them. Please support this business and taste his creations. Your mind and body will thank you. It is the real deal!
