This isn't something we enjoy sharing, but it's something that needs to be shared.

Wildland fires continue to impact our region, and unfortunately, the effects reach far beyond the hillsides, timber, and fields we see burning. Families, homes, livelihoods, and years of hard work can be lost in a matter of hours.

Today, we ask that you keep those affected by the fire from the Tucannon in your thoughts and prayers, especially the family featured in the post below. We also ask that you remember the firefighters and first responders who continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and property.

Tragedies like this remind us how quickly life can change, but they also remind us of the strength of a community that comes together when its neighbors are hurting.

***BEGINNING OF SUMMER UPDATE***

The first head of broccoli has been harvested!

This marks the first harvested plant of Bowman Ranch Produce, which means there's a whole lot more to come.

A little earlier than expected, but we're certainly not going to complain.

Farm-fresh, homegrown food is some of the best food you can have. Not only do you know exactly where it comes from, but it's also something you've helped create yourself... with a little help from the Man Upstairs, of course.

Bowman Ranch eggs, the finest eggs around... We may be a little biased on that, but you just can't beat free-range, farm-fresh eggs.

Our hens put in a full day's work every day, producing the multicolored-shelled ovals of goodness we've all come to enjoy. They don't ask for much in return, just feed, water, and the occasional compliment. 😄

At Bowman Ranch, we believe you should know where your food comes from, so meet a few of the gals who laid the eggs that are now on your plate.

In 1860, Bowman Ranch began to take shape. Now, 166 years later, it is taking shape once again.

With more than a century and a half of history, not only helping build the American West, but also contributing to the evolution of modern ranching practices and equipment, Bowman Ranch rededicates itself to pioneering a path forward for future generations.

Today, it has become increasingly clear that knowing where your food comes from is just as important as understanding the dedication, hard work, and stewardship required to provide a safe and reliable food supply.

It has often been said that without farms, there is no food. More importantly, without the independent family farm, there is no honesty in the work, no direct connection to the land, and no enduring commitment to the communities that depend upon it.

Agriculture helped build this nation. Farmers helped defend it. In many ways, our Founding Fathers were farmers first and statesmen second. As the United States of America approaches its 250th year, and as Bowman Ranch reflects on more than half of that history, we recognize a deep yet humble responsibility to this land and to the industry that helps feed the world.

As proof of that dedication, here are a few photos of some of our fruits and vegetables. With a little sunshine and a few more days of patience, they should be ready before we know it.

Stay tuned for more updates as the season moves forward, along with a few special posts celebrating our legacy as a nation, as a people, and as a ranch.

Until then, enjoy the photos, keep an eye on those gardens, say a prayer for good weather, and remember to support your local farmers and ranchers whenever you can.

***END OF SPRING ANNOUNCEMENT***

Our deer-planted wild blackberries are going to be prolific this season and will be joined by our strawberries, brand-new loganberries, and Bowman Ranch's raspberry patch, which celebrates 20 years this year. Every raspberry plant on the ranch traces its "roots" back to the original plants that were put in the ground two decades ago.

We've also got plenty of lavender, mint, and spearmint growing strong, along with several new additions to the garden. So far, everything is looking healthy and promising.

As we head into summer and the hot days ahead, remember not to overwater your plants, but don't underwater them either. Watering in the morning or evening is usually best because it reduces water loss from evaporation and gives plants more time to absorb the moisture they need.

Here's to the 2026 season. Whether you're a large outfit with thousands of acres, a small operation that's just the perfect size, or a backyard micro-farm, if your food comes from the ground or you raise it yourself, we wish you the best of luck, pray for healthy livestock, and hope your yields are high.

Miner’s Lettuce - a native, naturally occurring plant found throughout the Pacific states.

Rather than treating it as a w**d, we allow it to grow and flourish here at Bowman Ranch during its season. It’s one of the quiet signs that spring has arrived, and just as importantly, it supports the local wildlife. Deer and rabbits are especially fond of it, and we value the life it brings to the land as much as the plant itself.

Miner’s lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata) carries a bit of living history. It earned its name during the California Gold Rush of the mid-1800s, when miners relied on this hardy green as a fresh food source in otherwise harsh and limited conditions. Rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, it helped prevent scurvy and kept many prospectors going through long seasons in the field. Long before that, Indigenous peoples across the West harvested and used miner’s lettuce as a staple in their diets, recognizing both its nutritional value and its dependable seasonal growth.

Today, it remains just as useful. Tender, mild, and slightly sweet, miner’s lettuce makes an excellent addition to fresh, backyard salads and can be enjoyed raw or lightly prepared. What some might overlook as a simple groundcover is, in truth, a resilient and historic plant that continues to serve both people and wildlife alike.

At Bowman Ranch, we believe you should know your food, where it comes from, how it’s grown, and the history behind it. There’s something important about stepping outside, seeing what the land provides, and understanding that food doesn’t begin on a store shelf, it begins in the soil. Plants like miner’s lettuce are a reminder that generations before us lived directly from the land, relying on what was available, local, and in season. That connection is something worth preserving.

Farm Fresh, Straight from the Coop

Bowman Ranch eggs come from free-range hens and are gathered fresh from the nesting box to the carton, then straight to your refrigerator. They are unwashed and left in their natural state, just as they were laid. This preserves the protective bloom and keeps them as close to nature as possible. There are no extra steps, no artificial coloring, and no unnecessary handling. What you get is an honest egg, the way it was meant to be.

Our birds are raised with care, given room to roam, and allowed to live as chickens should. That quality shows in every carton. Rich yolks, strong shells, and a flavor that speaks for itself.

Knowing where your food comes from matters. It is something too many have lost sight of, and something we are committed to bringing back. At Bowman Ranch, everything we offer is raised, grown, harvested, and made with purpose and pride.
