This past June, PNW artist and educator Amanda Leigh Evans met with Beechinor Farms to learn more about the valley’s local soil, and build an art installation around that. She also met with 2 organic farmers, a soil scientist and a geologist. The completed project is now being exhibited at Whitman’s Sheehan Gallery. We visited last week and it was great to see how everything came together and Amanda’s use of soil as a medium, as well as being a part of her project that “highlights the complexities of social and ecological interdependence”. Sheehan Gallery is free to visit and open to the public every day except Mondays.

The significant technological advances in farming are few and far between compared to many industries, so when there is a valuable one, Beechinor Farms likes to be at the forefront of embracing new things. This system attaches to a sprayer and has multiple sensors that can detect where the weeds are - and then communicates to the nozzle to spray just where needed. How amazing! No more putting chemical on dirt that doesn’t need to be sprayed. The benefits are enormous - we save money by using substantially less product, we continue and improve our practice of excellent stewardship of the ground by not applying chemical to the ground where it isn’t needed, and we save immensely on one of our most precious resources, water. This is the future of farming!
